Industry - map question G2004 There is an industrial estate at Rassau, grid squares 1412/1512 What are the advantages and disadvantages of this location for an industrial estate? The advantages are that there will be plenty of workers since the traditional industry has declined (1). The site is on the edge of a built up area so the land will be cheap (1). The transport links are good as there is an A class road (1) which means goods can be transported in and out quickly (1). The main disadvantages of the site are that it’s difficult to expand (1) due to the sloping land to the north (1), with wooded areas to the east and south (1) and marshy land to the north (1).
Industry - map question C2005 Use map evidence to explain the location of the Central Park Business Park in grid square 8583. The labour force to work in the factories can come from Larbert or Falkirk (1). The site is an area of open, flat land (1) which has room for expansion (1) and car parking (1). The good transport links will allow the site to connect easily with its market (1). There are good transport links with the motorway to the north and an A road to the south (1). This is combined with free flowing traffic at the roundabouts (1). Good transport links are very important for modern business parks (1). The nearby golf course is good for employee recreation (1).
Industry - industrial location and choice G2005 Look at Reference Diagram Q7. A steel company is considering building a new integrated steelworks at either A or B. Which site do you think they should choose? Give reasons for your answer. Remember: always use PLSMRTG or your factory diagram! Site A: There is a skilled labour force available since steel was produced here only 5 years ago (1) and the workers may not have found another job (1). There is still coal available as a raw material found in deeper seams (1). Transport links are very good as there is new roads to be built (1) and there is a rail link to the coast (1) which allows the iron ore and steel to be easily transported (1).
Industry - location factors C2003 Study Reference Diagram Q6A and Q6B. Suggest reasons why Nissan chose to locate their car manufacturing plant at this site in Washington, NE England. There are many reasons why this is a good site. There is a big workforce in Newcastle and Sunderland (1). Redundancies in engineering industries means there is unemployed skilled workers looking for jobs (1). There is plenty of flat land to build on (1) as well as room for future expansion (1). The transport links are good. The site is very accessible by lorries being close to several A class roads and the M1 motorway (2). There is also a port for shipping components in or vehicles out (2). Finally, government grants are available for locating in an area of high unemployment (1).
Industry - choice of location G2003 Look at Reference Diagrams Q5A and Q5B. Which site - A, B, C, D or E is the best for a modern port? Give reasons for your answer.
Industry - industrial change G2004 Do you think the changes that have taken place between 1974 and 2004 have improved the area? Give reasons for your answer.
Industry C2004 Look at Reference Diagrams Q6A and Q6B. What are the advantages of locating a car factory at Burnaston? Nearby cities like Derby and Nottingham could provide both a labour force and a market (2). The skilled labour supply could come from the people who worked in the British Railways (1). The site is large with room for expansion (1) and is greenfield land which is cheap to buy (1). There are good transport links such as the international airport (1) which is good for management to visit or go to other sites (1). There is also easy access to main roads (1) for the movement of products and people (1).
Industry - out of town developments G2004 Look at Reference Diagram Q7A. A, B and C are proposed sites for the development of a large retail park. Which site do you think is best for this development? Give reasons for your choice.
Industry - map question C2002 Air transport is increasingly important to the economy of cities such as Aberdeen. Look at Aberdeen airport on the map. Using map evidence, describe the advantages and disadvantages of the site of Aberdeen airport. There are many advantages to this site. There is flat land to build on and room for expansion to the north (2). Also the aircraft taking off and landing to the north don’t go over many houses (1). The size of the city provides a good market for the airport (1). There are good transport links for the airport such as A96(T) dual carriageway in to the city (1) and the railway links from Dyce (1). The disadvantages are that the flightpath does go over some housing which creates noise and air pollution (1). Also expansion is difficult to both the east and west (1). Industrial location factors: P - power T - transport L - labour force G - Government aid S - site M - market R - raw materials / R + D
Industry - map question C2004 Give reasons for the differences between the leisure activities located in square 9771 and those located in squares 9468 and 9469. 9771 is the oldest part of the town so contains places of historical and cultural interest (1) such as the castle and cathedral (1). There are also services for tourists such as the bus station and information centres (1). 9468 and 9469 are nearer the edge of the town with scenic lakes and woodland (1) which is suitable for the creation of a country park (1). Land is less expensive to suitable for camping and caravanning (1).
