Pornpisa V. 431-8446 Woraphan A. 441-4107 Siwa O. 451-2685 InfiniBand
Infiniband was mergin g 2 technology together are Future I/O from IBM, Hewlett Packard and Compaq and N ex t Generation I/O ( NGIO ) from Intel, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems. For a short time before the group came up with a new name, InfiniBand was called System I/O. Background
A Switch Fabric Architecture Which Enables: Increased Network Bandwidth Improved Reliability – Failover Loss-less Connectivity Support Shared Resources Lower CPU Utilization What is InfiniBand ?
In finiBand uses a bidirection al serial bus so that it can avoid the signal skew problems of parallel busses when communicating over relatively long ( room - or building - scale ) distances . Although it is a serial connection, it is very fast, with 2.5 gigabits per second ( Gbit / s ) links in each direction per connection . InfiniBand also supports double and quad data rates for 5 Gbit / s or 10 Gbit / s respectively . What is InfiniBand ? InfiniBand Data rates, raw / data   SDR DDR QDR 1X 2.5 / 2 Gbit / s 5 / 4 Gbit / s 10 / 8 Gbit / s 4X 10 / 8 Gbit / s 20 / 16 Gbit / s 40 / 32 Gbit / s 12X 30 / 24 Gbit / s 60 / 48 Gbit / s 120 / 96 Gbit / s
Protocol/Architecture
A fabric of InfiniBand switches and links is used to provide connections between servers, remote storage and networking devices. Protocol/Architecture
InfiniBand solution InfiniBand (IB) is an industry-standard, channel-based architecture that features high-speed, low-latency interconnects for distributed computing infrastructures. Multiplexing network data onto a common link, InfiniBand combines networks into a unified fabric that collectively routes data between host nodes and network peripherals. InfiniBand’s common interconnect reduces the required number of adapters and cables (including support spares), which significantly reduces total cost of ownership (TCO). Protocol/Architecture
InfiniBand is NOT a disruptive technology –it can start with one application InfiniBand will migrate through the data center over time and co-exist with – Ethernet – Fibre Channel InfiniBand will complement the performance of a variety of “inside the box” interfaces – PCI–X DDR – PCI-Express – Hyper-transport – Rapid IO – SPI-4 InfiniBand and Other I/Os
Comparing I/Os
Comparing I/Os
Applications The application that required InfiniBand is the application that need High Bandwidth Low Latency Low processor overhead The Example of Applications -Latency Sensitive - DBMS - High Performance Computing Ex. CAD -Bandwidth-hungry -OLAP, OLTP and web -Specialized imaging -Communications Intensive -Distributed Computing - Heavily interconnected servers
CAD – Computer Aided Design
Heavily interconnected servers
Strength High performance interconnection Low Latency for cluster computing up to thousands of nodes Peer-to-Peer communication S tandard that is supported by multiple vendors Weakness Expensive Strengths/ Weaknesses

Now InfiniBand s pecified and maintained by the InfiniBand Trade Association ( IBTA ). Now & Future The role of the InfiniBand Trade Association The IBTA has three primary objectives: Plan and develop comprehensive specifications that meet current and future requirements. Draw on existing technology to advance the concept of peer - to - peer interconnection Utilize its governance authority to balance the development process in an open and fair manner.
Fortunately the InfiniBand community continued to develop new p roducts with improved features and performance and developed robust and full featured software . InfiniBand is growing rapidly in the beach head markets of high performance computing and performance business computing in the data center. All of the major server vendors are offering InfiniBand solutions to the market and there is rapid adoption and deployment of the technology across a broad range of applications. This success in turn is driving demand for InfiniBand storage. Now & Future
“ InfiniBand will enable more effective exploration of the data center. Data mining becomes much more efficient.” ~ Nathan McQueen, IT Architect, University of Washington. “ The scalability of InfiniBand allows us to meet the demands of internal business customers as well as business applications within Best Buy.” ~ Jeff Kizlik, Data Center Manager, Best Buy Now & Future
