• #5: in your own words: What's Oracle's strategy? Right now we're working on four things. We're trying to be best-of-breed at every layer of the stack, whether that's at the hardware layer, silicon or storage. We're trying to be best-of-breed in OS's, in databases, in middleware and applications. We want to work in heterogeneous environments and have a high level of enterprise fit -- to be the best at everything we do. And we line up -- engineering to sales -- to do that.Secondly, we then vertically integrate those pieces. We will take those very same piece-part capabilities that I described and bring them together into a vertically integrated system, like what you see in Exadata, Exalogic and Exalytics, that can provide extreme performance and extreme benefits from a total cost of ownership perspective. For example, the Exadata solution can deliver 70-times improvement in performance -- a report that took 70 minutes now takes one minute. So we're vertically integrating for extreme improvement in performance and TCO for our customers.Thirdly, we are building out our industry capabilities. We're building out our ability to solve our customers' problems that are unique by industry. We have a group focused exclusively on building out solutions in industries like retail, banking, health care, utilities, areas like these. That supplements the other two pieces I described.Fourth, we want the ability to deliver all the capabilities I just described any way the customer wants to get them, through whatever delivery architectures are appropriate for them. We've announced the Oracle Public Cloud -- and I want to make sure I'm clear in differentiating the Oracle Public Cloud. This is an open public cloud. If you want to move data from our cloud to Amazon and then move it back to our cloud, our cloud is open. It won't be like a proprietary cloud from another company, where once you're in their cloud you can't get out. Ours is standards based. At the same time, we can help you architect a private cloud or you can take our applications and our capability onsite and -- just as important -- you can mix and match. You can have a division that's on HCM [human capital management] applications in Asia in the cloud and you could have a division in HCM onsite. You can have your CRM the opposite way, if you so choose and you can change your mind.For us, it's all four: best-of-breed; vertically integrate for extreme differentiation; build out our industries; and deliver with whatever architecture is best suited for the customer. • #7: •Key Data Center Issues Being Examined at Gartner Data Center Conference, December 5-8 in Las Vegas•STAMFORD, Conn., December 5, 2011— IT managers are beginning to view the data center more holistically and are taking a more strategic approach to technology procurement and deployment, and technology and service providers that sell into the data center will want to broaden their marketing approach, according to Gartner, Inc."If you are selling into the data center, you are no longer just competing head-to-head with familiar competitors selling like products," said April Adams, research director at Gartner. "Today, you have increased competition not only in your specific area of technological expertise, but for overall enterprise mind share, as well. Providers will need to expand their view of the competitive landscape and consider alternative ways to go to market in order to highlight their strengths and maximize their sales potential."Gartner has identified six ways that technology and service providers can go to market in the data center.Option 1: Compete as a SpecialistIf a provider is competing as a specialist, it specializes in one technology area, and it doesn't try to be all things to all people. It doesn't go to market with converged systems or as a one-stop shot. Specialists want to be perceived as best-in-class in their technology area and covet a reputation as the provider with the most innovative or advanced technology. The primary advantage of this go-to-market option for strategic marketing, product marketing, product management, marketing communications and brand managers is that the approach is familiar. The primary downside is the changing market environment that introduces new competition. True specialists may well be better off trying to lead within their technology area than expanding into adjacent markets.Option 2: Go to Market as a Traditional Portfolio ProviderPortfolio providers are large providers that sell all or some of the various components that make up the data center infrastructure. In the traditional portfolio provider model, these technologies are developed in-house. The primary advantage of this go-to-market strategy lies in the provider's size. Most traditional portfolio providers are large enterprises, which means that they have the resources on hand to focus effectively on more than one technology area and produce successful, if not always groundbreaking, products in the areas deemed important to the customer's marketing strategy. Traditional portfolio providers should carefully monitor the market, and if there is any chance that they might move toward a converged offering, they should begin to explore how an integrated product might be deployed.Option 3: Partner to Achieve a Portfolio OfferingPartnering is an alternative way to get all the necessary data center infrastructure components into the provider's portfolio if it doesn't have offerings in every category in-house. This approach also enables providers to focus their resources on the things they do best and rely on partners for the rest. However, partnerships can be fickle, and sometimes they falter. Those taking the portfolio-by-partnership route should not underestimate the resources required to effectively manage and nurture these partnership relationships.Option 4: Develop a Converged OfferingSome portfolio providers have taken a step beyond certification, integration and test, and developed converged systems or integrated offerings for the data center. If the trend of approaching change in the data center with a definitive strategic plan that includes an integrated project road map continues into 2012, then going to market in this way could position providers as market leaders rather than market followers. Undertaking this strategy is a bold move. This approach represents a commitment to a new kind of data center and a new relationship between providers and customers. It requires significant investment and has the potential to take a long time to achieve a good return on investment (ROI).Option 5: Hedge Your Bets by Using Multiple ApproachesPortfolio providers with a data center transformation (DCT) offering have the opportunity to sell both in the traditional, silo-based way and as a converged system or integrated stack. This strategy has all the benefits of both strategies and, with the exception of not being part of the holistic data center conversation, all of the disadvantages as well. Going to market both ways allows providers to cover all the bases no matter what buyers opt to do, both individually in the short term and collectively for the longer range.Option 6: Sell Your Data Center Technologies as a ServiceThe final go-to-market strategy alternative for the data center is to deliver the technology as a service — cloud or otherwise. There are several ways to achieve this:

These become the building blocks that customers can build their solutions, but they have already been engineered to work together.» Or we can to all the way to the massively simplified, purpose-built Engineered Systems, such as Exadata, Exalogic and the new Exalytics, and the general purpose engineered system, the SPARC SuperCluster. » But since customers have a wide variety of needs, we take this even further with our Optimized Solutions, which provide flexible, predictable guided deployments that reduce risk, lower TCO and improve productivity that customer build on top of Best-in-Class products or the SPARC SuperCluster.With Oracle Optimized Solutions, you are able to select the best solution for a particular problem and then integrate the parts. In this case, you have a guided deployment, you know that all of the parts are designed to work together in an optimal fashion, you have the flexibility to change or substitute various components, but you know it’s going to work at the end and you purchased it all from one company so service is easier. A that’s a big win.Additional Information:In fact, this illustrates Oracle’s overall strategy for transforming the datacenter. Today’s IT infrastructure is massively customizedwith mix & match technologies that have led to this enormous IT complexity and rising costs.Duplicate systems, proliferating and inconsistent data about customers, employees, products and services, and makeshift integrations lead to longer times to market, poor customer service, inefficient processes and lost opportunities for achieving economies of scale. The complex web of systems and processes results in long lead-times for projects and increasing pressures on datacenter power and cooling. Systems are relatively fragile and risky to modify. Focused on components (perhaps pools of compute or storage components) Services/Labor intensive (internal or external resources): implementation, integration and ongoing maintenance Application / Services deployments are Unique  drives up cost/time/fragility, slows down agility/speed of changesMost Vendors and Customers are focused on Infrastructure Building Blocks as the future directionIncremental Improvements via low-level building blocks (e.g. Server virtualization):Most companies and vendors are able to achieve incremental improvements and efficiencies through server virtualization, and moving towards virtualized pools of compute, storage & network resources. Typically low-level hardware and hypervisor/server building blocks, not application oriented Limited to incremental improvements Oracle offers this too because there is real value in standardizing even at the IaaS levelMassive simplification is Game changing We see an inflection point in the industry – an opportunity to move past the typical incremental improvements and fundamentally change the IT operating model. Oracle is focused on the game changing opportunities for how IT buys, deploys & runs services. Two key areas are elastic cloud services and pre-integrated, workload optimized systems. The goal is take out massive amounts of labor – not just upfront, but throughout the lifecycle of the services you deliver to the business.Oracle is uniquely positioned to deliver vertically integrated systems, delivering a transformation of how technology for the datacenter. Integration happens at multiple layers of the technology stack, starting with “best in class” component technology, database, middleware, and applications, and ultimately through tightly integrated, highly optimized, engineered systems for specific and general purpose workloads.
• #9: I mentioned how Oracle engineers the entire stack to work together, and that reduces complexity, drives better performance and better savings. If you look at what the alternative is, lets say you get the database from Oracle, but you run it on RedHat, using VMware for virtualization on HP gear running WebSphere. You could be using any number of different storage and networking vendors, might even have a few Windows Servers in the mix. Those disparate products were all designed and engineered by different teams around the world and it’s simply not possible for all of components to be designed and tested to work together with best practices that will yield anywhere near the same results. There is simply no single place where you can go to find out what to order with what, what works best with what, and then how get the most out of a particular set of technologies. So this means not only does the customer have to deal with all these different vendors and purchase orders, they also have to figure out how to put it together. That’s time and money that could be spend on either new solutions, or in transforming I.T.
• #13: So; looking at how platforms get purchased and launched – what can be done?Let’s play around a bit and compare the traditional model to a pre-integrated model ..Assume that by pre-integrating we take a lot of testing, integration, planning and setup out of implementation and running the platform. Let’s assume that we can remove 75% of the implementation cost and 50% of the running cost.This would mean that the platform would cost 43% less over time. Money that could be spent on new initiatives that help your company accelerate it’s business. Money that can be spent on being proactive and solving problems before they appear ...
• #14: Compared to the previous example; in this slide we assume a 50% reduction in running cost and 75% reduction in implementation cost based on pre-integrated, pre-tested, pre-packaged solutions. We call it Engineered Systems. Not only a reference architecture – it can actually be bought, implemented and operated as one system.Relative cost on the order of ”57 units” compared to the previous example.

• #16: We are excited to launch 4 new products that joined Exadata and Exalogic in the Engineered Systems family earlier this year. These new products adhere to the same technology principles as Exadata and Exalogic, and extend the Engineered Systems’ value proposition. We have been in this business delivering Engineered Systems since 2008 with the introduction of Exadata followed closely by Exalogic. The success of these products has been trulyamazing – outpacing even our goals for adoption. We have over 1200 systems sold to date and expect that number to be 4000 later this year. Exalogic has already surpassed Exadata as the fastest growing product in Oracle’s history and the demand for our new products leads us to believe we will see even greater adoption of our products as they were designed to be “Better Together”.With all of our products the deployment time is minimized, manageability is maximized, the lowest total cost of ownership in comparison to our competitors is delivered to you, implementation risk is minimized, and as always you have one single point of contact for support. These core principles apply to our existing products, our new products, and will certainly apply to the innovation we continue to deliver.
• #17: Oracle’s integrated approach with SPARC SuperCluster allows customers to install and run applications and business services much faster than acquiring, assembling and cabling all the pieces together separately. In this illustration you can see that building a custom configuration takes months as the pieces are assembled, the systems is diagnosed and tuned and reconfigured, and issues are resolved through multiple vendors. Each SPARC SuperCluster engineered systems is the same, allowing systems to be delivered tested and ready to run and deploy in a matter of days or weeks, as opposed to months. Customers receive the identical configuration that is used by Oracle engineering and there are no unique configuration issues or complex options to troubleshoot. Therefore, SPARC SuperCluster arrives not only as a highly optimized, integrated platform to run existing database, middleware, and customer applications, but it is also easily supportable because all systems are the same. This high degree of integration means no errors in cabling, no issues in hardware compatibility, and built-in redundancy for network, storage, server and connectivity.

• #28: From a simple high-level perspective, SuperCluster can be thought of as a combination of Exadata and Exalogic.The multi-purpose SuperCluster is built on the computing power of the SPARC T4-4 server running the highly scalable Oracle Solaris 11 operating system. Integrated into SuperCluster is the database optimization that comes with Oracle Exadata and the accelerated processing of the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud software. The entire system has unified systems management with Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c
• #30: SPARC SuperCluster is much easier and cost-effective to manage than traditional servers. The System includes Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center, which enables customers to provide comprehensive management for all the hardware components and virtualization technologies in the stack. Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c saves time and reduces complexity by allowing customers to manage the application stack in the same manner regardless of whether applications are deployed on physical or virtual machines. Using a single management tool helps improve efficiency and reduces the risk of error that’s introduced when coordinating between multiple tools. Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center also provides the basic tools for managing the lifecycle across the entire hardware infrastructure of SPARC SuperCluster. Customers can perform regular maintenance activities such as health checks, proactive support, and resource monitoring and measurement. Additionally, Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides powerful capabilities to manage virtual environments. Technologies such as Oracle VM Server for SPARC, Oracle Solaris Zones, and an intuitive GUI interface enable improved management of virtual machines. Beyond Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center, customers will gain operational efficiencies though the unified patching and upgrading processes that are offered with SPARC SuperCluster. Unlike traditional server environments that require complex and frequently time-consuming patching and upgrade maintenance windows, SPARC SuperCluster is designed to offer a more seamless and integrated process around software and system updates. Embedded hardware diagnostic capabilities provide ‘phone home’ automated service requests. The standard and pre-tested configuration also enables proactive advice from Oracle Advanced Customer Services (ACS). Customers can mitigate risk and free up resources by removing the guesswork from managing critical software updates, patches, feature enhancements, and new releases, as these are automated in SuperCluster. Upgrades and enhancements will be delivered pre-tested so customers know that the entire system is managed and patched from a central point of service accountability.

• #62: The Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) distributed database product includes the Lock Management System (LMS), a user-level distributed lock protocol which mediates requests for database blocks between processes on the nodes of a database cluster. Fulfilling a request requires traversing and copying data across the user/kernel boundary on the requesting and serving nodes, even for the significant number of requests for blocks with uncontended locks. We have created a kernel accelerator (KA), which filters database block requests destined for LMS processes and directly grants requests for blocks with uncontended locks, thereby eliminating user-kernel context switches, the associated data copying, and LMS application-level processing for those requests.The KA exports shared memory in which the LMS locking daemon places its lock table. The KA intercepts DBMS block requests over the RDSv3 communications protocol used between cluster nodes and calls into a DBMS-provided kernel accelerator run-time (KA RT) module, which consults the shared-memory lock table. If the lock is available, the KA replies from the kernel, granting the request directly to the requesting node; if the lock is not available, the KA passes the request up to the LMS user process, which handles the request in the same fashion as when no KA is present.This not only speeds up the process of granting locks, but it also frees up CPU cycles, thus allowing for better throughput in the order of 30-40% depending on the workload.Note: The next generation Oracle Database technology uses the Oracle RAC Kernel Mode Acceleration. The kernel accelerator is available for Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Linux.
• #63: As a direct result of rewriting the Oracle Solaris virtual memory system, we have been able to do more for the performance of Oracle database deployments on the Oracle Solaris platform.The System Global Area (SGA) is a group of shared memory areas that are dedicated to an Oracle “instance” (an instance is your database programs and RAM). All Oracle processes use the SGA to hold information. The SGA is used to store incoming data (the data buffers as defined by the db_cache_size parameter), and internal control information that is needed by the database. You control the amount of memory to be allocated to the SGA by setting some of the Oracle “initialization parameters”.  OptimizedShared Memory (OSM) allows dynamic resizing of SGA without having to reserve memory and reboot the database like Linux or AIX. This also helps to improve the start up and shutdown of database instances. Using one (or fewer) OSM segments will be faster and simpler than using many Intimate Shared Memory (ISM) segments.OSM has the advantages of DynamicIntimate SharedMemory (DISM) but has resolved the issues of DISM.With OSM memory can be allocated as needed (rather than all at once), and the traditional memcntl() interface can be used to adjust allocation policy. The new interfaces are "optimized" for real world usage – they offer flexibility without compromising performance, and functionality without onerous user requirements. The interfaces are based on the concept of a "granule size", which is set once as part of creating the segment This approach was adopted because it reflects an important real-world usage pattern, and it allows the application to communicate a very relevant bit of usage information (the granule size) to the operating system.Note: The next generation Oracle Database technology uses OSM to dramaticallyspeed up database start and stop operations and allow online resizing ofthe SGA to avoid downtime. This feature is only available in Oracle Solaris 11.
• #64: Since the acquisition of Sun, Oracle Solaris engineering teams have been working closely with the Oracle Database team and how innovations in the OS could help database deployments. Oracle Solaris DTrace is a dynamic tracing capability in the operating system that allows administrators to observe what’s happening in real time on live production systems safely. This technology has powered the ZFS Storage Appliance analytics, and administrators can use it to ask questions about application performance right across a system. If everyone was equal - like a low budget airlines – your service level (and your performance) suffers – but you expect it. QoS enables multi-tenancy or the ability to provide multiple service levels. So, you can have a Tier 1 OLTP application, a business critical Exchange environment and a tertiary archive application all on the same storage system – with distinct QoS or performance levels.
