Infrastructure…
MEANING OF INFRASTRUCTURE…
• It’s a combination of two words
"infra" meaning (below) & "structure“
• An underlying base
Or
Foundation
Especially for an organization or
system.
WHAT IS IT INFRASTRUCTURE…?
“Set of physical devices and
software required to operate
an enterprise”
The five technology drivers of
infrastructure include
 Moore's Law and Micro processing Power.
 The Law of Mass Digital Storage.
 Metcalf's Law and Network Economics.
 Declining Communication Costs and the
Internet.
 Standards and Network Effects.
Moore's Law and
Micro
processing Power.
Who is Gordon Moore….
 Gordon Moore is an
American business man,
cofounder & chairman of
Intel corporation and the
author of Moore’s law.
 Born in Jan 3,1929.
(85 years)
 Gordon Moore is a
visionary.
What is Moore’s law….?
“Moore’s law states that the number of
transistors on a microchip will increase
exponentially typically doubling every
two years.”
MICROCHIPS: Micro chips are the power houses of electronic
industry.
Variations
There are three variations following as:
1) Double Speed:
The speeds over a number of years
went between 1.3 GHz and 2.8 GHz.
2) Double Performance:
Double the number of transistors double the
performance.
CONTINUE….
3) Half Price:
Due to continuously new & improved
version of electronics the price rapidly
fall within a year or so.
EXAMPLE….
Intel leads the semi-conductor by delivering.
 The world 1st 3D tri-gate transistor. Mass
produce on the 22nm process in 2011.
 A new processor generation every two year.
 A world Wide Filicon Fab.
Limitations
 Growth rate may stop between 2017 to 2025
 Atomic sized transistors.
 Intense pressure on technology companies.
Joke….
There's a joke about personal computers that
has been around almost as long as the devices
have been on the market……
Mass Digital
Storage….
Mass Digital Storage….
“ The amount of digital
information stored is roughly
being doubled every year.”
Key Points….
 The amount of digital information being stored
doubles every year.
 5 Exabyte of unique information is produced
every year.
 Information growth involve magnetic storage of
digital data.
Exabyte = a billion gigabyte.
EXAMPLE NANOTUBES
10,000 times thinner than a human hair.
They consist of rolled up sheets
of carbon hexagons.
Discovered in 1991
Used in making super capacitors.
Improves efficiency of electronics.
Example of PC hard disk capacity...
Metcalf's Law and
Network
Economics…
Who is Robert Metcalfe….?
 Robert Melancton "Bob"
Metcalfe is an electrical
engineer from the United
States.
 He is the co-inventor
Ethernet and formulated
Metcalfe's Law.
 Born in April 7,1946.
Metcalfe’s law….
“In 1970 The Metcalfe's law states that the value
of a telecommunications network is
proportional to the square of the number of
connected users of the system.”
GRAPH
Limitations….
Difficulty in quantifying the "value" of a network,
 Metcalfe's law measures only the potential number of
contacts.
Network saturation & load effects not accounted for
Effects of hostile jamming not accounted for.
Complex time domain dependencies.
EXAMPLE
Two telephones can make only
one connection, five can make
10 connections, and twelve can
make 66 connections.
Declining
Communication
Cost & The
Internet…
Declining Communication Cost &
The Internet…
“Rapid decline in the cost of communication
and the exponential growth in the size of
internet.”
Key Points…
An estimated 1.8 billion people worldwide
have internet access (Internet world stats, 2010.)
 As communication cost fall to a very small
number.
EXAMPLE
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modems
now deliver a kilobit of communication for a
retail price of less than 2 cents.
Standards …
“Specification that establish the compatibility
of products and the ability to communicate in
a network.”
