Input Devices
• Input devices are those devices from
which we can input data and instructions
into the computers. A number of input
devices have been developed.
KEYBOARD
It is most commonly used input device. It
is used to input data into written form.
Keyboard is merely a collection of
momentary switches.
MULTIMEDIA KEYBOARD
• Multimedia keyboard
has some additional
keys to operate
multimedia operations
like volume up,
volume down, play,
pause, stop etc.
Buttons on a keyboard are called Keys.
We can type letters, numbers by simply
pressing these keys.
KEYS ON A KEYBOARD
NORMAL KEYBOARD
• A normal keyboard has 101-104 keys
which are distributed in five categories.
• Function keys
F1 to F12
• Alphanumeric keys
A-Z, a-z, 0-9
• Special keys
Alt, Ctrl, Enter, Insert, Home,
End, Esc etc.
• Numeric keypad
0-9,+,-,*,%,@ etc.
The different keys on the keyboard are:
1. Alphabetic Keys
2. Number Keys
3. Function Keys
4. Special Keys
5. Arrow Keys
Types of Keys
ALPHABETIC KEYS
These are marked with the English alphabets from
A to Z. There are 26 Alphabetic Keys.
They are placed closely so that our fingers can reach there easily.
NUMERIC KEYS
The keys marked with numbers from 0 to 9 are called
Number Keys.
The number keys are also
placed at the right side of the
Keyboard known as Numeric
Keypad.
Special Keys
These keys works in combination with other keys
Spacebar Key
* Longest key on the keyboard.
* Used to give spaces between the words.
Cursor Movement keys
Used to move the cursor in four direction i.e. up,
down, left and right.
UP
LEFT
RIGHT
DOWN
Caps Lock Key
Used to type the letters in capitals
When you press the Caps
Lock Key the light on the
keyboard will turn ON. If
you press it again, the light
will turn OFF.
Backspace Key
Used to delete the character to the left of the cursor
Shift Key
Used to type the letters in capital or small case
without using Caps Lock key.
Also used to type symbols printed on the top of the
Number Keys.

Enter Key
Used to tell the computer that you have
finished a word or line. It brings the cursor
down to the next line.
Delete Key
Used to erase anything typed from the right side of
the cursor.
Function Keys
The Function keys are placed at the
top row of the keyboard marked with
F1, F2.......F12
They are used to perform special
functions.
Tab Key
Allows the cursor to jump five spaces forward
All the above keys combined together to form a
Keyboard
POINTING Devices
• Input devices those are used to control
the movement of cursor on screen are
called pointing devices
MOUSE
• It is a pointing device used
to insert instructions into
the computers. It is a hand
held device that controls the
pointer on the screen. It has
two buttons viz. left button
& right button & one
scrolling wheel. With the
help of mouse you can draw
images, select options &
move text & images.
TRADITIONAL MOUSE
• Traditional mouse is used a
ball built into the bottom with
two small rollers placed two
sides of the ball at 90 degree
angle from each other. They
spin when the ball rolls. A
sensor detects how much
each roller spins and sends
the information to computer
and the pointer on the screen
moves into the same
direction.
OPTICAL MOUSE
• Optical mouse is a advance
pointing device that uses a
light diode (LED)(1), an
optical sensor (2) and a
digital signal (3) processing
in place of traditional
mouse ball. Optical mouse
need plan surface to
produce high performance
efficiency. Each time the
mouse is moved, the beam
of light is interrupted by
the surface.
Tracker ball
• A trackball is a pointing device which look like
mouse. It has two or more buttons. The buttons
work like mouse. It has a rotating ball on it top. The
ball move with the help of finger. Rotating the ball
move the cursor on screen.
Touch Pad
• A touchpad is a pointing device consisting of
specialized surface that can translate the
motion and position of a user's fingers to a
relative position on screen.
TOUCH SCREEN
• Touch screen is the easiest way
to data input into computer.
Touch screen allows the user to
select the item by touching the
screen at appropriate spot. It
has another feature that the
user’s finger become the input
device to operate touch screen.

Pointing Stick
• Pressure sensitive
device shaped like a
pencil eraser that is
positioned between
keys on the keyboard.

Graphic Tablet
• It is a flat, rectangular
electronic plastic board
• Also called a “digitizer” or
“digitizing tablet”
• Used along with a stylus
• One use: architects, map
makers, artists, and
designers create drawings
and sketches using it
Light Pen
• A handheld device
that contains a light
source or can detect
light.
• Some require specially
designed monitors.
• One problem is hand
fatigue.
Light Pen
• A light pen is a computer input device in the
form of a light-sensitive wand used in
conjunction with a computer's CRT TV set or
monitor.
JOYSTICK
• Joystick is a pointing device
mostly used for playing
games. This is a device used to
control the actions in a
computer game. It consist of a
lever used to move the
pointer on the screen and
buttons used to select
options.
Pen-based Computer System
• Weighs around 3 lbs.
• Uses a digital pen
• Microsoft version uses
Windows XP Professional
• It has handwriting and
voice recognition
capabilities
– Take notes and save
them
– Convert handwritten
documents into typed
documents
Stylus
• Looks like a ballpoint
pen. It uses pressure
to write and draw
lines.
• Original names were:
“electronic pen” or
“e-pen”

Devices
• Input devices those are used for direct
data entry to the computer system.
Bar code reader
• Bar code reader are
used to read the values
printed on the product
in form of vertical lines.
Bar codes are recorded
on the products by the
manufacturers and
usually carry the
product number.

MICR – Magnetic Ink Character
Recognition
• MICR is used by banking industry for faster
processing of large volume of cheques
• Bank’s identification code (name, branch, etc.),
account number and cheque number are pre-
printed (encoded)using characters from a special
character set on all cheques
• Special ink is used that contains magnetizable
particles of iron oxide
• MICR reader-sorter reads data on cheques and
sorts them for distribution to other banks or for
further processing

OCR – Optical Character Recognition
• Scanner with a character recognition software
(called OCR software) that converts the bit map images
of characters to ASCII codes
• Enables word processing of input text and also requires
less space for storing the document
• OCR software is extremely complex because it is difficult
to make a computer recognize an unlimited number of
fonts
• Two standard OCR fonts are OCR-A (American standard)
and OCR-B (European standard)

OMR – Optical Mark Reader
• Scanner capable of recognizing a pre-specified
type of mark by pencil or pen
• Very useful for grading tests with objective
type questions, or for any input data that is of
a choice or selection nature

• A magnetic stripe card is a type of card
capable of storing data by modifying the

SCANNER
• Scanner is an input device used
to insert a picture into the
computer. This is a peripheral
device that converts a printed
image into digital information.
There are two types of
scanners:
FLAT BED SCANNER
• A flat bed scanner uses
a flat surface just like
photocopier. We can
place a picture on the
surface of the scanner:;
scanner scans the
image and convert into
digital form. The picture
can be seen on the
monitor screen after
scanning.
