This document provides instructions for inserting footnotes in Microsoft Word 2007 and Google Docs. In Word, the "References" tab contains a button to insert footnotes. Footnote numbers go outside all punctuation except dashes. Word automatically numbers footnotes consecutively. Footnotes appear at the bottom of the page in a single-spaced section that must be changed to double-spacing. In Google Docs, the "Insert Footnote" button adds a footnote marker and box. After writing the footnote, downloading the doc to Word converts the boxes to proper footnotes, though formatting may need adjustment.
