Instructional Design PhilosophyExamplesMy philosophy is “How can I get an idea from one head into another in the fewest megabytes, in the shortest time for the least cost and with the least knowledge degradation?” I’ve developed soft-skill and technical training since the late 80s, beginning with test specific materials I developed and taught myself. Later I managed teams of Instructors in regulated and accredited environments, developing learning modules, tests, courses and full programs, for national and international projects and accounts. Much of my material was developed in multiple languages. A holistic approach I’ve found works best. I look at the big picture first; organizational directives, desired learning outcomes, compliance requirements, life-span of information, available budget and tools, time available for development and cultural readiness for training methods, Then I involve my team as required, train members as required, and begin developing to push excellence within established constraints. My experience includes developing hybrid materials, online training in real time and fully asynchronous, working independently, in a matrixed environment, with my own team, with vendors (locally and internationally) and development of remote asynchronous teams to create informational websites and training materials. My core strength is educational however many of my projects are linked to PR and marketing campaigns.Example work Online:Pro Bono for Dr. Susan Johnson, OHSU and Johnson Clinic for Women's Health. Dr. Johnson is a gynecological surgeon with expertise in robotic laparoscopic surgical procedures. www.womenshealthawareness.blogspot.comand http://womenshealthawareness.googlepages.com/Home.htmlContract Instructional Design work for AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association – ASF Air Safety Foundation. This is online asynchronous training for pilots. Pilots earn FAA credit for passing the quizzes at the end of these training modules.http://www.aopa.org/asf/online_courses/Pro bono for community sustainability issues, fully bilingual in Spanish and English>www.sustainanomics.blogspot.comandhttp://sustainanomics.unst.pdx.edu/(article in newspaper) http://media.www.dailyvanguard.com/media/storage/paper941/news/2008/04/04/News/Class.Creates.Site.To.Promote.Simple.Sustainable.Living-3304304.shtmlDeveloped for the City of Portland to promote green space use and prevention of storm water runoff:www.ourspacegreenspace.blogspot.comand http://ourspacegreenspace.vndv.com/Over 80 other commercial and organizational interactive examples available on CD-ROM, in text and online.Rob Bremmer – 503-452-3955 – robertfbremmer@msn.com
Interactive Storyboard: Airfoil Angle-of-Attack + Relative WindMy first Storyboard, developed in 1992 for MentorPlusSoftware, (later-Jeppesen Inc.) I developed this on a Mac PowerBook 165c, using an early drawing tool. Designed for interactivity, the radio button allowed visualization of chord line, relative wind and resultant angle of attack. The slider bar allowed the wing to be pitched up or down showing how the laminar airflow (yellow lines) breaks up and becomes turbulent as the angle of attack exceeds critical angle.Rob Bremmer – 503-452-3955 – robertfbremmer@msn.com
Rapid Online - Soft Skills Group Productivity TrainingStoryboarding can also be used to normalize development team patterns over time. I developed this technique in 2007 and used it in face-to-face group settings. I now use it as an online training tool at the start of remote group projects. In these panels, some standard group dysfunctions are identified and described, along with examples for excellence in group dynamics. These panels are used at the start of group development in a matrixed group environment where teams must form rapidly and function effectively over a sustained period of time. Visual Storyboard for Time-based Technical AnimationThe top four panels show my PowerPoint storyboard . The lower two panels show the QuickTime movie made from my storyboard by a third party animation vendor using Maya. Once past final approval the movie moves into production. It will be released this fall by ASA (Aviation Supplies & Academics). The final version will have a voice-over supporting specific details over the two minute video, which will be embedded in an interactive training DVD used by student pilots nationwide. http://www.aopa.org/asf/online_courses/Textual Storyboard Matrix for Interactive Online TrainingThis project for the ASF Air Safety Foundation was developed entirely online with remote teams. As Instructional Designer I called out in an Excel spreadsheet what would occur in the interactive training module for both time based and non-time based material. The storyboard went to a Producer/Director who distributed my instructions to various 3rd party vendors, who in turn created audio, animation, graphics and video assets, which were returned electronically to the producer for assembly. The final product was released in Flash. The link, above, allows access to the free training. Rob Bremmer – 503-452-3955 – robertfbremmer@msn.com
Brandon-HallAward WinnerExcellence in Online LearningOnline Assessment with Process, Flow & LessonSoft Skill Training - The Oregon Restaurant Education Foundation upgraded their Alcohol Server Permit Training, taking it fully online. I developed the concept, and the method using storyline modules . Here two actresses mimic ‘VIPs’ (Very Intoxicated Persons) . The module also models appropriate server response. The module concludes with a practice quiz, shown above. The real test is also online. Rob Bremmer – 503-452-3955 – robertfbremmer@msn.com
