SHELTERED 
INSTRUCTION

Three Classroom Scenarios 
Below are three classroom scenarios in 
which tools and recommendations could 
be used to support English language 
learners: 
1) Building Vocabulary in the Classroom 
2) When the class is using computers 
(the teacher passes out a handout 
with visuals of the computer screen so 
that the students can follow along) 
3) Have students work together learning 
from each other and making decisions 
as a group will help ELLs develop their 
English language skills
TECHNOLOGY THAT DEMONSTRATES A CONCEPT, SKILL, OR 
STRATEGY 
SightWords – a free innovative app that includes flashcards and 
games, and allows you to add your own words and voice. The app is 
designed to be shared by teacher/parent and child working together. 
LinguPinguin – full app costs $1.99 per language set. The app is 
available in multiple languages. It allows students to compare familiar 
words in their own language to pictures and concepts, and match 
them with English words.
TECHNOLOGY THAT PROVIDES FEEDBACK FOR STUDENT 
DEVELOPMENT 
Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) – 
specific technology that utilizes Automatic Speech 
Recognition (ASR) software to record and evaluate the 
accuracy of an individual’s pronunciation and provide 
feedback and modified instructional scaffolding.
TECHNOLOGY THAT HELPS STUDENTS BUILD THEIR 
VOCABULARY 
LittleFox – lite version is free, full access has a monthly subscription 
fee that gives you access to over 2,500 stories and 300 songs. The 
app features leveled reading stories and songs with images, voice 
narration, and available captions. There is also a quiz that follows 
each story. 
Learn English – allows students to match written words to images to 
test key vocabulary and additional lessons are available for purchase.
