TOO AND ENOUGH
TOO
‘Too’ means there is moreof something than we wantor can handle. It
shows a NEGATIVEOPINION.
It’s too hotand I don’tlike it.
A common mistake is to use ‘too’ as a positive term. Remember it is
NEGATIVE.
It’s too hot! I love the summer! WRONG
Itis also importantto not use ’too’ when wemean ‘very’. Wedo not say:
My family is too big
Because that means there are too many people and you possibly have to kill
some of them. ‘Too’ is the idea that there is more than wecan live with,
more than we can handle.
There are too many people in the room, I can’tbreathe.
We can use ‘far’ with ‘too’ to add emphasis:
She is far too busy to attend the meeting today.
1. WithAdjectives andAdverbs:
You are too tall. You will have to sit in the frontseat.
He speakstoo fast. I can’tunderstand anything he says.
2. WithNouns:
When we useit with nouns we need to also use much (uncountable) and
many (countable):
There are too many peoplein the lift. Someone needsto get out.
You have too much sugar in your diet. You need to change it.
3. WithVerbs:
We can also use‘too much’ after a verb:
You talk too much.
He drinkstoo much.
ENOUGH
‘Enough’ means you have what you need.
1. WithNouns:
Itgoes BEFOREa noun
We have enough chairs.
2. WithAdjectives andAdverbs:
Itgoes AFTER an adjective or adverb:
She isn’t tall enough to be a model.
He didn’tdrink fast enough.
With‘to + verb’
We often use ‘enough’ and ‘too’ in a sentence with ‘to + verb’:
I’m sober enough to drivethis morning.
We have enough people to start the meeting.
It’s too hotto think.
He’s too big to fit into his clothes.
