INTENSIVE VS EXTENSIVE
READING

WHAT IS INTENSIVE READING?
Intensive reading is the reading method wherein learners are
supposed to read the short text carefully and deeply in order
to get maximum understanding . Intensive reading involves
learners reading in detail with specific learning aims and
tasks .
For example: A book report , reading a contract or insurance,
reading a short passage to answer certain questions etc.
WHAT IS EXTENSIVE READING?
Extensive reading also called as effective reading can be defined as
casual reading for pleaure or general understanding of a text . It
involves larger texts and their general reading for enjoyment and better
understanding of the concept as whole .
For example: Reading a novel , a magazine , comic book , a short
story etc.
COMPARISON BETWEEN INTENSIVE
AND EXTENSIVE READING ...
Intensive Reading
1. This kind of intimate ( intensive)
reading is carried out for 100%
understanding of the text.
2. Intensive reading involves reading
shorter texts deeply and carefully.
Extensive Reading..
1. This kind of effective( Extensive)
reading is carried out for general
understanding of the text.
2. Extensive reading involves
reading larger texts casually.

Conclusion
So in the end it is clear that both types of reading are important for a
reader .
Extensive Reading is used for casual and simple knowledge of any
subject of one’s own choice having no focus whereas ,
Intensive Reading requires complete attention and is bound to a
subject with its specific details being a focus for the reader.
