Parts of the Heart Atria (or atrium for plural) The heart has 2 atriums, or chambers, on the right and left side of the heart. They fill with deoxygenated blood that returns from the body and oxygenated blood that returns from the lungs. Ventricles The heart also has 2 ventricles, one on the right side and one on the left side of the heart. Ventricles are bigger than atria and stronger too because their job is to push the blood out to the rest of the body and lungs. Quit Main Click Here for Heart Diagram
Parts of the Heart Cont… Septum The thick wall of muscle that separates the left side from the right side of the heart. 4 Valves Mitral Valve (or Bicuspid) : is located between the left ventricle and left atrium. Tricuspid Valve : is located between the right ventricle and right atrium. Both valves allow blood to flow from the atria to the ventricles Aortic Valve and Pulmonary Valve (also called semilunar valves): controls the blood flow away from the heart Quit Main Click Here for Heart Diagram
Parts of the Heart Cont… Superior and Inferior Vena Cava Receives deoxygenated blood from the body Inferior vena cava receives blood from the lower body Superior vena cava receives blood from the upper body Aorta Largest artery in the body Sends oxygenated blood to the body from the left ventricle Pulmonary Artery Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle into the lungs  blood receives oxygen in the lungs Pulmonary Vein Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium Quit Main Click Here for Heart Diagram
Function of the Heart Your heart is a muscle that continuously works to pump blood throughout your body. It provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs while also carrying away waste products. The right side of the heart receives blood from the body and the left side of the heart pumps blood throughout the body. The valves act as check valves or one way doors to regulate the blood flow and direction of flow. Quit Main Click here to follow the blood’s journey through the heart!
Blood Circulation through the Heart and Body Superior/Inferior Vena Cava  Right Atrium  (through Tricuspid Valve)  Right Ventricle  (through Pulmonary Valve)  Pulmonary Artery  Lungs  Pulmonary Vein  Left Atrium  (through the Mitral or Bicuspid Valve)  Left Ventricle  (through Aortic Valve)  Aorta  to the Body Quit Main Click here for Heart Diagram
Lub-Dub Lub Dub is the sound your heart makes with each beat. Lub is heard when Tricuspid and Mitral (Bicuspid) value close. Dub is the sound that is heard when the Aortic and Pulmonary Valves close. A stethoscope is used by physician’s to listen to your heart. Click on image below! A heart murmur is heard when a valve is unable to close all the way. Quit Main
Heart Rate Your heart rate or pulse is the number of times your heart beats per minute (bpm). The normal resting heart rate occurs between 70 and 100 bpm. An athlete will have a lower resting heart rate than someone who exercises less. Each beat is due to your heart contracting. Quit Main
Find Your Heart Rate Your heart rate be found by placing your index finger and your middle finger up against your skin in the following locations. Count the number of beats in one minute! Try to find your friend’s pulse! Quit Main
How to have a Healthy Heart Exercise, exercise, exercise! Your heart is a muscle and needs to be kept active to stay healthy and efficient at pumping blood throughout your body. Eat a variety of healthy foods and drink plenty of water. Avoid foods that are high in fat! Unhealthy foods over time can constrict your blood flow throughout your body and heart! Avoid: smoking or second hand smoke, drugs, alcohol, and stress! Quit Main
Heart Healthy Facts The average human heart beats more than 2.5 billion times in 70 years. Your system of blood vessels – arteries, veins and capillaries – is over 60,000 miles long. That's long enough to go around the world more than twice! A child’s heart is about the size of a clenched fist. An adult’s heart is about the size of two fists. The heart beats about 100,000 times each day. Blood is about 78% water. Click on the image on the right! Quit Main
