• Keeps track of new technology
• Facilitates researchers in the use of new methodologies and technology
• Facilitates the use of state of the art collaboration environments
• Supports new ways to publish and reuse articles, data and research software.
• Has a proactive role during all phases of the research proces (before, during and after
research)
• Collaborates with partners if desirable

Problem statement
Much of the Internet’s image-based resources are locked
up in silos, with access restricted to bespoke, locally
built applications.
Universiteit Leiden. Bij ons leer je de wereld kennen
Goals
• To give scholars an unprecedented level of uniform and
rich access to image-based resources hosted around the
world.
• To define a set of common application programming
interfaces that support interoperability between image
repositories.
• To develop, cultivate and document shared technologies,
such as image servers and web clients, that provide a
world-class user experience in viewing, comparing,
manipulating and annotating images.
Universiteit Leiden. Bij ons leer je de wereld kennen
Benefits for end users
• Fast, rich, zoom and pan delivery of images.
• Manipulation of size, scale, region of interest, rotation,
quality and format.
• Annotation. Users can comment on, transcribe, and draw on
image-based resources.
• Compare pages, build an exhibit, or view a virtual collection
of items served from different sites.
• Cite and Share - IIIF APIs provide motivation for persistence,
providing portable views of images and/or regions of images.
•Support for institutional authentication.

The IIIF Image API
The IIIF Image API specifies a web service that returns an image in response to a
standard HTTP or HTTPS request. The URI can specify the region, size, rotation,
quality characteristics and format of the requested image.

The IIIF Presentation API
The IIIF Presentation API describes how the structure and layout of a complex
image-based object can be made available in a standard manner. The
Presentation API provides an order for these views, the resources needed
to display a representation of the view, and the descriptive information needed
to allow the user to understand what is being seen.
Resource types:
• Manifest: The overall description of the structure and properties of the
digital representation of an object.
• Sequence: The order of the views of the object.
• Canvas: A virtual container that represents a page or view and has
content resources associated with it or with parts of it.
• Content: Content resources such as images or texts that are associated
with a canvas.

Manuscript: Der naturen bloeme.
Universiteit Leiden. Bij ons leer je de wereld kennen
The IIIF Presentation API
Resource types
• Collection: An ordered list of manifests, and/or further collections.
• Annotationlist: An ordered list of annotations, typically
associated with a single canvas.
• Layer: An ordered list of annotation lists.
• Range: An ordered list of canvases, and/or further ranges.
Resource properties
• Label, metadata, description, thumbnail, attribution,
licence, logo, @ID, @type, format, height, width,
viewing direction, ….........

More APIs
IIIF Authentication API 1.0
Provide interoperable access to restricted content through client applications
running in a. web browser.
IIIF Content Search API 1.o
Of the list of content types, textual resources lend themselves to being searched,
either as the transcription, translation or edition of the intellectual content, or
commentary, description, tagging or other annotations about the object.
The scope of the specification is searching annotation content within a
single IIIF resource, such as a Manifest, Range or Collection.

Getting started
•Experienced developers: Github.
•A little help: Bodleian Library.
Digital Manuscripts Toolkit
• A lot of help: Centre for Digital Scholarship
- Researcher is in the ‘driver seat’
- Building on the existing digital infrastructure of the UBL
- Activities contribute to the development of new services
- Limited capacity
- Agile project methodology (SCRUM)
- Progress monitored in Trello
• The Digital Musharaf: Virtual reconstruction of
“Writing the Word of God, Part I”, fragments of which
are present at Bodleian Library, Bibliotheque
Nationale de France, Chester Beatty Library, Herzog
August Library
Reconstructing dispersed fragments
International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)
Comparing Images
• Archaeology of Reading is project conducted
by John Hopkins Univerity, Universilty
College London and Princeton University
Library
• Aim is to create a corpus of important and
representative annotated texts with
searchable transcriptions and translations
International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)
Text retrieval within a
corpus
• Welsh Newspapers Online
