What is Internet?
Internet is a huge collection of a computer all
over the world that are connected to one
another.
History of Internet
• Internet was started in 1960’s during the cold war
of Russia & America.
• During cold war, Russia launched sputnik satellite
and America developed a network. Its name was
*ARPANET.*
• The internet has its root in the ARPANET
system of the Advanced Research
Project Agency of U.S.
• ARPANET is known as the forefather of
internet.
Basic service od internet
• Electronic mail
• FTP
• Telnet
• Usenet news
• The WorldWideWeb
Electronic mail
• is also known as e-mail in
short
• t enables to send and
receive a mail (message).
• It is Faster than paper
mail.
• Images, audio, video can
be sent along with text.
File transfer protocol (FTP)
• It enables users to move a file from one
computer to another computer.
• A file may contain:
Text document
Image
Artwork
Movie
Sound
Software
Telnet
• It enables users to login to another
computer on internet from their local
computer ..
• This action is called ‘remote login’.
• It stands for Teletype network .
Usenet news
• The Usenet is a huge worldwide collection of
discussion groups.
• Usenet news service enables a group of
internet users to exchange their views, ideas,
information on some common topic of
internet.
• A newsgroup is like a large notice board
accessible to all members belonging to the
group.
The world wide web
• It is a most popular method of accessing
internet.
• It uses a concept called hypertext.
• Hypertext documents on internet are known
as web pages.
• Web pages are created by using a special
language called HyperText Markup Language
(html)
Some uses of Internet
• To access information,news,research and
educational material.
• To conduct bussiness.
• Sources of internet such as online games
magazines etc.
• To meet & talk with people around the world
in the form of groups or chatroom.
• Send messages & receive messages from
other connected users.
Features of internet
• Simplicity
• Economy
• Flexibility of communications
• Speed and availability
• Accessibility
• Resource sharing
• Security …
Characteristic of Internet

What is Network?
• A network consists of two or more computers
that are linked in order to share resources
exchange files, or allow electronic
communications.
• The computers on a network may be linked
through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites.
Types of network
It Depending upon the geographical area
covered by a network, it is classified as:
• Local Area Network (LAN)
• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
• Wide Area Network (WAN)
• Personal Area Network (PAN)
LAN
• A LAN is a network that is used for
communicating among computer devices, usually
within an office building or home.
• It Is limited in size, typically spanning a few
hundred meters, and no more than a mile..
• LAN’s can be either wired or wireless.
Twisted pair, coax or fiber optic cable can be
used in wired LAN’s.
• Has lower cost compared to MAN’s or
WAN’sA
MAN
•A Network that is bigger than a LAN and smaller
than a WAN.
•MAN is the interconnection of LANs spread
around a city with a high-speed connection.
•A cable TV network, or a local Wi-Fi network
provider in a city, Government Offices or
corporate sectors connecting multiple offices LAN
may be considered as examples.
•MAN is a high-speed network as compared to
WAN.
WAN
•It is the network extended over a large
geographical areas and is the interconnection of
several LANs and MANs.
• To cover great distances,WANs may transmit
data over leased high-speed phone lines or wireless
links such as satellites.
•It may span City, Country, Continent, or even the
World.
• The world's most popular WAN is the
Internet.
PAN
•It is the network centered on an individual’s
workspace.
•Electronic gadgets like Computers,
smartphones, Tablets, Headphones, Earbuds,
etc. are connected.
•It uses low powered wireless connectivity for
short-distance communication.
•It uses connection techniques like Wireless
USB, IrDA, Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc.
