DEFINITION
тЮв Interpersonal relationship refers to social and emotional
interaction between two or more individuals in an
environment.
тЮв Interpersonal relationship is also defined as the close
association between the individuals who share common
interest and goals.
IMPORTANCE OR PURPOSES
A. Interpersonal relationshipfor anindividual:
- Personalgrowth and development.
- Source of enjoyment.
- Sense of security.
- Context of understanding.
- Interpersonal needs.
- Establishing personal identity.
B. Interpersonal relationship for nurses :
тЮв Building a positive functional multidisciplinary team.
тЮв Improving intra or inter team communication,
coordination and cooperation.
тЮв Building mutual understanding and cooperation.
тЮв Understanding self.
тЮв Improved decision making and problem solving.
C. Interpersonal relationship
for patients :
тЮв Developing a sense of
security and comfort.
тЮв Fostering trust and
cooperation.

DYNAMICS OF INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP
A. DYAD:
тЮв A dyad consists of two interacting
people.
тЮв One person delivers a message and
the other person listen.
тЮв The interaction ends when one
constituent of the dyad refuses to
listen or share his or her message.
тЮв Focus of listening and
communication is centered on only
one person.
B. TRIAD:
тЮв A triad consists of three
interaction people.
тЮв The members engage in the relay
and reception of thoughts and
ideas.
тЮв It is more stable than the dyad as
third member may act as a
mediator when there is a conflict
between the other two.
C. GROUP :
тЮв A group consists of more than
three members and is a
collection of triads and dyads.
тЮв It is the most stable form
of interpersonal relationship.
TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL
RELATIONSHIP

1) FRIENDSHIP:
тЮв The theories of friendship emphasize on the concept as
a freely chosen association between individuals.
тЮв They develop common ground of thinking and
behaviour like mutual understanding, love, trust,
respect and unconditional acceptance for each other.
тЮв Friendship is a relationship with no formalities and the
individuals enjoy each others presence.
2) FAMILY AND KINSHIP:
тЮв Family communication pattern establish roles and
identify and enable personal and social growth of
individuals.
тЮв Family relationships can get distorted if there is an
unresolved conflict between members.
3) PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP :
тЮв Individual working for the same organization are said to
share a professional relationship and are called as
colleagues.
тЮв Colleagues may or may not like each other.
4) LOVE:
тЮв A informalized intimate relationship characterized by
passion, intimacy, trust and respect is called love.
тЮв Individuals are deeply attached to each other and share
a special bond.
5) MARRIAGE:
тЮв It is a formalize intimate relationship where two individuals
decide to enter into wedlock and stay together life long
after knowing each other well.
6) PLATONIC RELATIONSHIP:
тЮв A relationship between two individuals without feelings of
sexual desire for each other is called a platonic relationship.
тЮв In such a relationship ; a man and a woman are just friends
and do not mix love with friendship.
7) CASUAL RELATIONSHIP:
тЮв In this type of relationship; individuals usually develop a
relationship that exclusively lacks mutual love that does
not extend beyond one night.
8) BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOOD:
тЮв Individuals united for common cause and interest such
as formal membership in the societies, associations,
organization etc.
тЮв Individuals are committed to doing good deeds for
fellow members and people.
9) ACQUAINTANCES:
тЮв It is a type of relationship where someone is simply
known to someone by introduction or by a few
interaction.
тЮв There is an absence of close relationship and the
individuals lack in depth personal information about
her.
тЮв This could also be a beginning of a future close
relationship.
