What is traffic engineering?
Traffic engineering is a branch of civil
engineering that uses engineering techniques to achieve
the safe and efficient movement of people and goods on
roadways.
ROAD INTERSECTIONS:
When two or more roads intersect each other, it is
called Intersections or Road Junction.
 Road intersections should be designed to provide
safety to road users and free flow of traffic.
Factors to be considered in design of
Intersections
1. Accidents should be reduced.
2. Sufficient visibility should be ensured for vehicles.
3. Adequate lighting should be provided during night.
4. Proper signs, guard rails, traffic islands should be
provided.
5. Proper pedestrian crossing should be provided.
6. Free flow of traffic is allowed at design speed.
Road intersections
At grade intersections Grade separated intersection
Un channelised channelised
An intersection is a junction where two or
more roads meet or cross. Roads that cross each other at the
same level or elevation are called At grade Intersections.
At Grade intersection …
They are classified into
two types.
They are:
1. Un Channelised
2. Channelised
Un- Channelised At Grade Intersections…
These are At-grade intersections without islands for
directing traffic into definite paths.
These are simple in design and dangerous in traffic
operations.
These are classified into :-
a. Square junction
b. Skew junction or Acute junction
c. T- junction
d. Y- junction
e. Multiple junction
Square junction
Skew junction (or)
Acute junction
T- junction
Y- junction
Multiple junction
Channelised At Grade
Intersections…
At these intersections islands are
introduced to reduce the total conflict area
available. These islands are useful to channelise
the turning traffic, to control the speed and
angle of approach.
Different Types Of Grade
Separated Intersections Are:-
1. Round about interchange
When two or more roads meet at a point
round about is to be provided. At the round about a
highway is crossed at a level called round about
interchange. There is no disturbance to the highway
traffic.
2. Flyover…
In grade separation interchange,
the intersecting Roadways are placed at a
different elevations to allow uninterrupted
traffic movement. In a fly over the roads of
major importance are taken over the roads of
lesser importance.
3. Diamond Intersection
It is used when heavily traffic road
crosses the less traffic road. It has 4 one way ramps. It
requires more right of way and proved to be of less
expensive of all other interchanges. In this crossing,
vehicles cross each other one above the other and one
who wants to turn will stop and make merging or
diverging.
4. Clover Leaf Junction…
0 It is to be provided when two high speed roads meet
at right angles and when the vehicular traffic is more
than 5000 vehicles per hour. In this junction high
speed is achieved, right hand movements are
eliminated in order to reduce accidents.
0 This requires no traffic signals or no traffic police but
more place.
TRAFFIC ISLANDS
When two or more roads of equal importance
intersect at a point traffic islands were introduced and
all vehicles are compelled to move along the same
direction only.
There are different types of traffic islands. They are :-
1. Circular islands
2. Turbine Island
3. Rhombus Islands
4. Tangent Island
Circular islands Turbine Island
Rhombus Islands
Tangent Island
Conclusion
I would like to conclude that this section is about
effective usage of traffic intersections and islands is
very important in controlling the rate of traffic.
