- 1. Whether you are a student seeking a new career or an alumnus looking to advance, Career Services can connect you with valuable resources to help you succeed in the public health workforce. YOUR PATHWAYTO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER To be successful after graduation, you’ll need strong proficiency in six core “Career Competencies”. Doing so will allow you to effectively navigate change throughout your career. All career services offerings are designed to reflect these Career Competencies: 1. Articulate and apply academic course content in a professional setting 2. Gain relevant experience that enhances the student’s professional goals 3. Understand, develop, and articulate your “personal brand” 4. Develop a current set of “professional documents” 5. Engage in professional development through networking, professional organizations, and leadership 6. Successfully plan and execute a job search strategy that leads to employment ACCESS ColoradoSPH Connect FOR ALL YOUR CAREER NEEDS ColoradoSPH Connect is a centralized web portal where you can access all levels of Career Services and Practice- Based Learning. Some of the features of ColoradoSPH Connect include: • View jobs, practicum, internships, fellowships, post-doc, and volunteer postings • Store your resumes, cover letters, portfolio items, and more • Access to career resources, such as tip sheets, videos, and InterviewStream • Input and track your practicum experience • Access employer and Alumni contacts by syncing your account with your LinkedIn profile Create your account by visiting www.ColoradoSPHconnect.com and clicking on the Student login button. NEED SUPPORT ALONGTHE WAY? Many ColoradoSPH students find career advising helpful in providing support for their future careers. Our experienced, credentialed staff can meet with you via in-person or online conferencing. - 2. DON’T LEAVE CAREER SERVICES UNTIL RIGHT BEFORE GRADUATION! Following this basic career services timeline will keep you on track throughout your time at ColoradoSPH. Contact the Manager of Career & Employer Relations to discuss a customized timeline that meets your career needs. First Year Fall Semester n Set up your ColoradoSPH Connect account, upload your resume, access career resources, and start viewing practicum postings n Start to build your resume using the resume models and videos in ColoradoSPH Connect n Conduct at least 1 informational interview to explore career options and build professional contacts n Develop your LinkedIn profile and add portfolio items to it. Join the ColoradoSPH group and connect with alumni and community members First Year Spring Semester n Conduct at least 2 informational interviews with public health professionals in potential practicum opportunities n Prepare for upcoming practicum, internship, or research—update your resume, cover letter, and professional dress n Practice interviewing using InterviewStream in your ColoradoSPH Connect account n Identify and leverage your “personal brand.” Develop an “elevator pitch” that articulates your “value propo- sition” (skills, interests, experience, subject-matter expertise, etc.) n Identify and join professional associations as a student member for career exploration, networking, and professional development. Log into ColoradoSPH Connect for a list of options. n Solidify your academic concentration, if you haven’t already. Consult your faculty advisor with questions. Summer Session n Seek out seasonal/part-time work, internships, or practicum. Check ColoradoSPH Connect for opportunities n Connect with ColoradoSPH faculty for potential research opportunities n Conduct more informational interviews to explore public health career options and build professional contacts n Study abroad or seek opportunities to gain public health experience out-of-state n Prepare applications for further graduate-level study, if applicable Second Year Fall Semester n Conduct mock interviews with classmates, faculty, Career Services staff, or another public health professional.
