ELECTROSTATICS
ELECTRIC FIELDS
ELECTRIC FIELD
When two object are rubbed together, electrons are transferred from one
surface to another causing the objects to become charged
The object that
gain electrons
become
negatively
charges
The object that
looses electrons
becomes
positively
charged
Quick Experiment
Take a balloon and blow air into it.
Tie the balloon on top and rub it against your hair
Place an empty can on the ground and continue rubbing the
balloon
Move the balloon closer to the empty can and observe
Quick Experiment
• NOTE THAT WHEN YOU MOVE THE BALLOON CLOSE TO THE CAN, it MOVEs closer to THE
BALLOON
ELECTRIC FIELDS
• ELECTRIC FIELDS ARE REPRESENTED BY
ELECTRIC FIELD LINES
• THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE NOTED WHEN
DRAWING ELECTRIC FIELD LINES:
ELECTRIC FIELDS
1. Electric fields line are always
directed away from the positive
charge to the negative charge
2. The lines never cross or touch each
other
3. Field lines are drawn perpendicular
to a charge or charged surface
4. Field lines are drawn closer
together where the field is stronger
NOTE!!!
•Like charges
will repel each
other
NOTE!!!
•Unlike charges
will attract
each other
