Intro to horticulture

- 3. Horticulture • The ART of cultivating fruits, nuts, vegetables, or ornamental plants. • Horti = garden • Culture = garden
- 4. Floriculture • The cultivation of ornamental flowering plants.
- 5. Botany • The SCIENCE of plants to include anatomy, physiology and taxonomy.
- 6. Pomology • The science and practice of growing, harvesting and marketing tree fruits and nuts. Olericulture • The science and practice of growing, harvesting and marketing vegetables.
- 7. Agronomy The science and practice of grass and soils.
- 8. Annual • A plant which grows, flowers, produces seeds, and dies in one year. Must be replanted each year. Perennial • A plant that grows year after year without replanting. A plant whose roots lives year to year.

- 11. The Stem: • holds up the plant parts above the ground. • has tiny tubes to transport water an nutrients to the plant’s parts.
- 12. Leaves: • Make food for plants which is sugar • Take in carbon dioxide through tiny openings in the leaves
- 13. Roots: • Hold the plant in the ground • Take in water and nutrients for the plant’s growth
- 14. Petals: • Are the colored part of the plant

- 28. Simple leaf • A solitary leaf attached to a stem by a petiole. Compound Leaf • A group of leaflets which compose the entire compound leaf.
