Islam began in the 7th century in the Arabian Peninsula under the revelations received by Muhammad. The Quran and Hadith contain the core Islamic texts. After Muhammad gained followers, Islam rapidly expanded through military conquests and missionary activity across North Africa, the Middle East, and into parts of Europe and Asia. As it spread, Islam influenced local cultures while also incorporating some existing beliefs, with Sunni and Shi'a sects developing after Muhammad's death. Key connections also remain between Islam and earlier Abrahamic faiths of Judaism and Christianity.
