Introduction
 Gwadar Port is a warm-water, deep sea port situated on
the Arabian Sea at Gwadar in Balochistan province of
Pakistan.
 The port is a major destination in the China Pakistan
economic corridor (CPEC).
 In april 2015, Pakistan and China signed a deal to acquire
the usage rights to more than 2,000 acres of land for a
Chinese company, Chinese official media reported.
 The leasing would last 43 years.
 On 8 September 1958, Pakistan purchase Gawadar
Enclave from Oman for $3 Million.
 In 1993, The government of Pakistan create a plan to
develop Gawadar into a major port city.
 Phase 1 of Gawadar was completed in 2007, and
inaugurated on 20 March 2007.
 The Project (CPEC) was proposed by Chinese premier Li
Keqiang during his visit to Pakistan in May 2013.
Introduction (Conti…)
Gwadar Port Vision
 Gwadar Port is a national gateway port for
Pakistan, this region and a world-class maritime
hub.
 Gwadar Port is to complement Karachi Port and
Port Qasim in order to satisfy the country’s trading
and shipping needs, and to stimulate economic
growth in the western and northern parts of
Pakistan, utilizing the available resources of the
country
Gwadar Port Mission
 To create for all ships and all types of cargo ships
 To facilitate trade and industrial and economic
development, nationally, locally and regionally
 To operate in a manner that is efficient, effective,
competitive, transparent and fair to all
 To remain expectations of local and international
customers and stakeholders.
 In doing so, the development of both Gwadar City and
Gwadar Port will provide important contributions to the
socio-economic development of the district of Gwadar
and the province of Balochistan.
Gwadar Port Location
 In Makran division of province Balochistan.
 Approx. 120km from Iran.
 Nearest to the very important Strait ‘Hormuz’.
 Shore of Arabian Sea.
Gwadar Port Civic Center
 The Ministry of Ports and Shipping and Gwadar Port
Authority initiated the Project of building a modern Civic
Centre building in the heart of the Gwadar City to set a
model for the upcoming buildings in the future and to
develop the underprivileged area of Gwadar in particular
and Balochistan in general.
 The Civic Center is offering comfortable and state of the
art office accommodations, shops as well as residential
flats to satisfy for administrative and residential needs of
various organizations & Private persons.
Gwadar Port Importance for China
 China – largest population.
 Energy needs of China.
 Importer of oil from middle east.
 Gwadar- surrounded by countries having two
third oil reserves.
 Can act as shortest trade route to China.
Importance of CPEC for China
 Chinese industries are facing problems to compete in global
market due to high transportation cost and delivery time.
 China is using a longest way due to which transportation
cost and time increases, which gives a competitive edge to
competitors e.g. Japan, USA.
Importance for Central Asian Countries
 Central Asian countries
 Landlocked
 Have no sea port.
 Gwadar is shortest way to sea.
Importance for Pakistan
 Strategic and economic trade routes.
 Development of Infrastructure.
 Connect all the Province.
 Development of Fata, KPK and Baluchistan.
 Job opportunities
 Equalization among Provinces.
 Revenues from Gawadar Port.
Economic Impact of Gwadar Port Development on
Three Industries
 Figure suggests that Gwadar port development has the most significant
impact on the city’s tertiary industry, and with the score reaching 79.10.
 Secondary industries have taken the second place with the score of
73.29, while the primary industry only reaches the score of 60.05. As
noted above, the difference among the three sub-criteria is relatively
high which makes sense since port industry itself is a component of
tertiary industry.
