Introduction To 20
Classroom Hacks For
Education 4.0.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azmi Mohd Tamil
Department of Community Health,
UKMMC
About Myself
• Medical doctor with a Masters in Public
Health (BMedSc, MD(UKM), MPH(UKM))
• Born before the age of IT. Grew up
before the age of Internet.
• No IT qualification whatsoever
• To me an ORACLE is someone who
foretells the future, Java is an island in
Indonesia and ASP is something that
slithers and stings (egyptian cobra).
HL7 is HUKM Level 7.
Changing
Audience…
• Our students no
longer limited by
distance. Not only are
our students in KCKL,
PPUKM, Tg Karang &
Beranang complex,
they were also from
elsewhere;
➢ AUMS (till 2014)
➢ UST Sanaa, Yemen
(till 2014).
Changing Time…..
• Increasing number of medical students.
• Decreasing students to lecturers ratio esp in
medical schools.
• Despite lack of formal training in ICT (57%),
92% students use computer everyday.
• Mean years of using computers 8.25+4.40
among students.
• 90% accessed the internet daily. 99% of the
usage related to education.
• Therefore the time is right for a holistic
implementation of e-learning.

Formal vs Informal Approach
• Formal system tend to be too
structured. Limited by administrative
issues and limited options.
• Informal approach less restrictive,
wider adoption.
• Preferred by Generation Y. 92% of
medical students have a Facebook
account.
Informal Platform
Facebook & Blogs (i.e. Wordpress)
Communicate with students via
egroup/forum/Facebook
Lectures Using FB Live
Usage of Blog for Teaching
Assessment Using Google Form
Blog Usage by Students
MSIIa Survey (07/08)
• At the end of the posting, all the students
were assessed of their use of the e-learning
systems via self-administered questionnaires.
• When assessed at the end of semester, only
161 (67%) admitted to using the Moodle
system.
• Out of 51 written comments, 31 (61%)
complained of lack of internet access and 11
(21%) see no real need for such portal since
the notes will be photostated and distributed
by their class representative.
SPIN & BLOG USAGE
• 138 (75%) admitted using SPIN.
• Of these 138 students, 105 (76.1%)
agreed that SPIN is a good system
• 129 (69.4%) admitted visiting my blog.
Of these 129 students, 128 gave their
opinion about my blog.
• Of these 128 students, 118 (92.2%)
agreed that using blog to complement
teaching is a good idea.

Implementation of e-Learning
components in UKM Medical Education
• At the curriculum review workshop in Sept
2010, the faculty has agreed to implement
the following;
➢ e-PBLs
➢ e-SLPs
➢ e-Lectures
➢ e-Practicals
➢ e-SGDs
• Attempts were made for ePBLs but it was
later abandoned.
• Now, the implementation is rather ad-hoc.
• The focus is now on iFolio & MOOC.
Fourth Industrial Revolution
• The First Industrial Revolution (I.R.)
used water and steam power to
mechanize production.
• The Second I.R. used electric power to
create mass production.
• The Third I.R. used electronics and
information technology to automate
production.
• Now it is the advent of the Fourth
Industrial Revolution (I.R. 4.0).
Introduction to 20 Classroom Hacks For Education 4.0 (updated)
Fusion happens due to C-P-S
I.R. 4.0
• The I.R. 4.0 is really characterised by a
fusion of technologies that is blurring
the lines between the physical, digital,
and biological spheres.
• This is made possible by having billions
of people connected on smart mobile
devices (ala Star Trek Communicator),
emerging breakthrough in artificial
intelligence, robotics, autonomous
vehicles, 3-D printing, biotechnology
and many other fields.
I.R. 4.0
• Technology has made possible new
products and services that increase the
efficiency and pleasure of our personal
lives.
• Ordering a cab, booking a flight,
buying a product, making a payment,
listening to music, watching a film, or
playing a game; any of these can now
be done remotely from your
smartphone.
All done through handphone
Future Fusion of
technology?
Could be in Energy Storage?
Or in Power Generation?

Introduction to 20 Classroom Hacks For Education 4.0 (updated)
Education 4.0
• In Education 4.0, learning spaces are no longer limited
to classrooms and lecture halls, instead we have
virtual classrooms, accessible anywhere and anytime.
Facebook Live classes anyone?
• Maybe we can learn without having lectures, be
evaluated without having examinations, to prepare
students with new set of skills for the future.
• As automation substitutes for labor across the entire
economy, the human workers will be replaced by
machines.
• These displaced humans will need a higher skill sets,
to manage these machines and the new technologies.
Education 4.0
• The pedagogies for learning;
- heutagogy (self-determined learning),
- paragogy (peer-oriented learning) and
- cybergogy (virtual-based learning).
• Our curriculum had to be fluid and organic,
able to respond to innovations and new areas
of knowledge without being bound by
traditional rigid curriculum practices.
• And the teachers should incorporate the
latest learning and teaching technologies.
Are we ready?
• This is a tall order for us to fulfill.
• We were taught using chalk and
blackboard, progressing to white board
and marker pens and projecting
transparencies using overhead
projectors (OHP).
• Now we have to upgrade ourselves in
order to teach millenials, who grew up
with such new technology and being
constantly connected. How do we get
their attention?
Are we ready for Education 4.0?
Hacks for Education
My workshop is all about teaching
teachers/lecturers quick educational
hacks on;
• learning spaces
• utilising the different pedagogies
• responding to innovations by being
fluid and organic
• incorporating the latest learning &
teaching technologies in your teaching
methods.
