Contingency Table
Name of the Faculty: Dr. Baiju P
Department: Economics
Course Code: MEC204C23
Course Title: Data Analysis using Advance Statistical Tools
• In statistics, a contingency table (also known as a cross
tabulation or crosstab) is a type of table in a matrix format that
displays the multivariate frequency distribution of the variables.
• They are heavily used in survey research, business intelligence,
engineering, and scientific research.
• They provide a basic picture of the interrelation between two
variables and can help find interactions between them.
• The term contingency table was first used by Karl Pearson in "On the
Theory of Contingency and Its Relation to Association and Normal
Correlation“ part of the Drapers' Company Research Memoirs
Biometric Series I published in 1904.
• A contingency table is a statistical table used to represent the
distribution of categorical variables.
• It displays the frequency or count of observations falling into various
categories for two or more variables.
• Each cell in the table represents the count or frequency of a
combination of categories from the variables being studied.

Interpreting a contingency table:
• Examine Row and Column Totals:
• Look at the total counts in each row and column. These totals provide an
overall view of the distribution of observations across the categories.
• Calculate Marginal Proportions:
• Calculate the marginal proportions for each row and column by dividing the
row or column total by the overall total. This gives you the proportion of
observations in each category relative to the total.
