Introduction to differentGauges
Gauge:
An instrumentthatmeasuresandgivesavisual displayof the amount, level, orcontentsof something.
The thickness,size,orcapacityof something,especially asastandardmeasure,inparticular.
Stander Gauge:
If the gauge isan exact copyof matingpart of the componentto be checkeditiscalledstandardgauges.
Limit Gauge:
Widelyuse forthe checkingthe limitof dimensionsof the partlow limitandhigh limittheyare knowsas
Go-Gauge and NOGo-Gauge .Limitgaugesare made to the limitsof the dimensionsof the partto be
tested.There are twolimitof dimensions,sowe needtwolimitgauge.‘Gogauge’shouldpassthrough
or overa part while ‘NotGogauge 'shouldnotpass throughor overthe part.
Plug Gauge:
Pluggaugesare simple mechanical inspectioninstrumentsusedtoverifycompliance of threadedorplain
holestoupperandlowerdimensional limits.Pluggaugesare designedto“fit”or “notfit” (e.g.Go/No-Go
gauge) into holes, etc. Key specifications of limit gauges include the gauge type, gauge function and
measurement range. Plug gauges are primarily used as a quick pass/fail test to determine if a hole
diameter or thread feature lies within the specified range of acceptance.
Ring gauge:
Ringgaugesare simple mechanicalinspectioninstrumentsusedtoverifyproductfeature compliance to
upperand lowerdimensional limits.Ringgaugesare designedto“fit”or“not fit”(e.g.Go/No-Gogauge)
overcylindrical features.Keyspecificationsfor ringgaugesinclude the gauge functionandmeasurement
range.Ringgaugesare usedas a quickpass/fail testtodetermine if the outside diameterorthread
feature of a part lieswithinthe specifiedrange of acceptance.
Snap gauge:
Snap gaugesare simple mechanical inspectioninstrumentsusedtoverifythatthe outside dimensionsof
parts are withintheirspecifiedtolerances.Keyspecificationsinclude features,range,andaccuracy.Snap
gaugescan be eitherfixedoradjustable devices.Fixedsnapgaugesare manufacturedtoset
measurementswhereasadjustable snapgaugescanbe setto measure overrangesof measurements.
Taper gauge:
The most satisfactorymethodof testing ataperisto use taper gauges. Theyare also usedtogauge the
diameterof the taperat some point. Tapergaugesare made inboth the plugand ringstylesand,in
general,followthe same standardconstructionasplugandringgauges.
Thread gauge:
A thread gauge also known as a screw gauge or pitchgauge, is used to measure the pitch or lead of a
screw thread. This tool is not used as a precision measuring instrument rather it allows the user to
determine the profile of the given thread and quickly categorize the thread by shape and pitch.
Feelergauge:
Feelergaugesare simplestripsofdimensionallyaccurate shimstockusedformeasuringthe gapsbetween
machine elements.Settingautomotivecontactpointsandvalve lashare twoold-schoolexamplesof their
use.Insome instancestheyare usedasprecisionassemblyshimstoadjustthe clearancesbetweenmating
parts. Theyare oftensoldas sets that increase inthicknessbysome interval suchas 0.001 in. Spark plug
gauges are included in this group.
Radius and filletgauge:
The functionof these gaugesisto checkthe radiusof curvature of convex andconcave surfacesovera
range from 1 to25 mm.The gaugesare made in setsof thinplatescurvedto differentradiusatthe
ends. Each setconsistsof 16 convex and16 concave blades.
Indicatinggauge:
Indicatinggaugesemployameanstomagnifyhow mucha dimensiondeviates,plusorminus,froma
givenstandardtowhichthe gauge hasbeenset.Theyare intendedformeasuringerrorsingeometrical
formand size,andfor testingsurfacesfortheirtrue positionwithrespecttoone another.Indicating
gaugescan be of a dial or levertype.
Screw pitch gauge:
Screwpitchgaugesare usedinpickingouta requiredscrew andforcheckingthe pitchof the screw
threads.Theyconsistof a numberof flatbladeswhichare cut out to a givenpitchand pivotedina
holder.Eachblade isstampedwiththe pitchor numberof threadper inchand the holderbearsan
