THE KEYBOARD

The Keyboard
◦ Keyboarding is the process of typing and selecting keys on the
keyboard
◦ The standard keyboard most widely used is the QWERTY
keyboard. It takes the name from the first six characters on the left
of the keyboard’s top row of letters.

The Keys on the Keyboard
◦ The Escape Key (Esc)
◦ Located at the top left hand corner of the keyboard allows you to quit
or exit a task.
◦ The function Keys
◦ These are labelled F1 to F12. They are used to activate specific
commands that the computer can perform. For example, in Microsoft
word F1 opens the help feature, F4 repeats the last action and F12
activates the save option.

◦ Character Keys
◦ These are displayed in the rows below the function keys. They
consists of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and other symbols.
◦ Space Bar
◦ The longest key on the keyboard, it is used to insert a blank space
after each word and after punctuation marks.

◦ Modifier Keys
◦ The Caps Lock and the Shift keys are called modifier keys because
they modify or change the function of the character keys. They allow
you to enter text in upper case (capital Letters)
◦ Use Caps lock only if you want to type a large block of text in capital
letters
◦ Use the Shift key if you want a single capital letter, symbols that are
displayed at the top of a number and punctuation marks.

◦ Command Keys
◦ The Control (Ctrl) and Alternate (Alt) are special command keys or
system keys that you use in combination with other keys to perform
specific tasks.
◦ The Enter Key
◦ Used to enter a command or moves the cursor to a new line.
◦ Backspace
◦ Removes the character to the left of the cursor

◦ Delete Key
◦ Removes the character to the right of the cursor
◦ Tab Key
◦ Moves the cursor to the right of the page in large jumps or from one
section of a table to another.
◦ Arrow Keys
◦ Control the cursor so you can move it around a document without
clicking the mouse. There are four arrow keys together in a group.

◦ Home Key
◦ Moves the cursor to the beginning of the line
◦ End Key
◦ Moves the cursor to the end of the line
◦ Page up (Pg Up)
◦ Scrolls up so you can view upper sections of a document
◦ Page down (Pg Dn)
◦ Scrolls down so you can view lower sections of a document

◦ Scroll Lock
◦ Temporarily stops the scrolling of text
◦ Prnt Scrn (Print Screen)
◦ Allows you to take a picture of the computer screen and copy it to the
clipboard.
◦ Toggle Key
◦ A toggle key is any key that is used to initiate the action and the same
key removes it.
