Objectives – Day Two By the end of today, you will: Be able to define what a student-centred approach to learning is and list some benefits Be introduced to current learning theory and know how to apply it to ICT-learning environment Practiced new knowledge and skills in a guided, supportive environment
Student-centred approach “ You have to do it yourself, no one else will do it for you. You must work out your own salvation.” Charles E. Popplestone
Why student-centred learning? Stimulating learning environment based on interaction Active participation rather than passive Students fully involved in learning promoting: Independence Responsibility Active engagement
Conventional Learning Passive Sitting in lecture, classroom without role in learning Most decisions made by teacher Emphasis on receiving information Trainer is expert dispenser of knowledge and controller of activities Snoozing students!
Student-centred learning Students have responsible and active role Students required to make choices about what and how to learn Emphasis on enquiry-type activities Trainer as guide, mentor and facilitator of learning
Purpose – Day Two Acquire knowledge and skills adopting student-centred approaches, through: Introduction to current learning theories Constructivism (Bruner) Behaviourism Cognitivism (Kolb) Model new knowledge and skills through active learning in guided environment
