What is the history of OSI Model?
What is OSI Model ?
 The7 layers of OSI Model
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
History of OSI Model
Data in the communication devices needed to reboot when communicated with
device of different architecture.
Then ISO developed a standard called OSI model.
OSI was made in 1983 to increase communication standard
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
What is OSI Model ?
Stands for Open System Interconnection.
Conceptual frame work used to describe networking.
It is imaginary and describe set of rules.
It tells how data is communicated.
Layers Of OSI Model
Application
Presentation
Session
Transport
 Network
Data link
Physical
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Division of Layers
Application Layer
Presentation Layer
Session Layer
Transport Layer
Network Layer
Data Link Layer
Physical Layer
Upper Layer
Lower Layer
Middle Layer
Application Layer
Consist of network aware application
consist of software that interact one to another pc
The main purpose of this is to provide
File Transfer
Mail Services
Directory Services
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Presentation Layer
It performs
 Reformatting
 Compression
 Encryption
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Session Layer
It controls the communication
It establishes, manages and terminates user connection
It is a exchange of messages between computers
It synchronizes the user task
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Transport Layer
Controls the flow of data
Error checking is done
Segmentation and fragmentation of data
Sequencing of data
End to end delivery of data
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Network Layer
Responsible for establishing, maintaining and terminating
network connections
Finds the shortest path to destination network
Routing
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Data Link Layer
Responsible for reliability of physical link established on layer 1.
Framing
Flow control of data
Access Control
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Physical Layer
Bottom layer of model.
It consist of physical part of network and perform following
tasks
 Characteristics of Media
 Representation of bits
 data rate
 Transmission Mode
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
Over View
• Application layer enables user to access the network.
• Presentation layer perform data reformatting and encryption of data.
• Session layer establish manages and terminates connection.
OSI model is the backbone of the networking and networking decrease the communication gap
++
Transport layer divides large messages into small packets.
Network layer determines logical path to transfer data.
Data Link Layer converts small packets into frames and control the flow
of data
Physical Layer defines how data is transmitted and control how a
stream of bits ks sent and received over physical medium.
