- 2. Part 1 INTRODUCTION AND COURSE OVERVIEW

COURSE DESCRIPTION The course starts with a general introduction to the social work, covering the nature of social work, definitional issues, the history of the social work and the changing conceptualizations of its concerns. Social work’s historic commitment to social justice and to the elimination of poverty is integrated throughout the course. The course format includes lecture presentations, discussion, reading assignments, examinations and visits to social agencies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES • Present various conceptualizations of the nature, mission, knowledge base, value base and practice methods of the Social Work Profession. • Identify and to deal with unsettled issues in the conceptualization of social work practice in developing countries and to establish practice theories that are pertinent to the local practice, groups and communities. • Articulate and apply social work skills to problems of individualization.

- 10. MODERN CONCEPT OF SOCIAL WORK It is on evolutionary stage. Confusion in definition, philosophy and functions. Few countries equating it with social welfare and social service.
- 11. DEFINITION Social work is the provision of services designed to aid individuals, single or in groups, in coping with present and psychological obstacles that prevent or are likely to prevent full and effective participation in society (Herbert Bisno)
- 12. SALIENT FEATURES OF SOCIAL WORK It is helping activity. Social activity carried not for profit. It is a liaison activity.

CONCEPT OF SOCIAL WORK IN PAKISTAN • Still considered as charitable activity. • Based on religious percepts and moral standards. • Role of social worker suggested by Begum Liaqat Ali Khan (1955) • “The job of the social worker is, in reality, to create a sort of divine discontent; to help people themselves in recognizing their needs, in seeking out available facilities, in initiating action, in establishing proper adjustments with each other and their surroundings, and in generally, solving their problems.”

SCOPE OF SOCIAL WORK IN PAKISTAN • Scope expanded in 6th five year plan (1983-88) includes services: Child welfare, family welfare, women’s welfare, welfare of the physically and mentally handicapped, welfare of the aged, correctional services, community welfare services, staff welfare services, medical social work, social security, labor welfare and youth welfare.
