OVERVIEW
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course starts with a general introduction
to the social work, covering the nature of
social work, definitional issues, the history of
the social work and the changing
conceptualizations of its concerns. Social
work’s historic commitment to social justice
and to the elimination of poverty is integrated
throughout the course. The course format
includes lecture presentations, discussion,
reading assignments, examinations and visits
to social agencies.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES
• Present various conceptualizations of
the nature, mission, knowledge base,
value base and practice methods of
the Social Work Profession.
• Identify and to deal with unsettled
issues in the conceptualization of
social work practice in developing
countries and to establish practice
theories that are pertinent to the local
practice, groups and communities.
• Articulate and apply social work
skills to problems of
individualization.
BASIS FOR GRADING
Your grade will be determined from quizzes, assignments & attendance, and
exams; again, participation in lecture and class discussions is essential and
may determine your final grade. I reserve the right to modify the
assignments and points as needed during the term.

• “The job of the social worker is, in
reality, to create a sort of divine
discontent; to help people themselves in
recognizing their needs, in seeking out
available facilities, in initiating action,
in establishing proper adjustments with
each other and their surroundings, and
in generally, solving their problems.”

welfare services, staff welfare services, medical social
work, social security, labor welfare and youth welfare.
