Wellington College 1909 XV Most of these boys went to war in 1914.  Why did they go?
WW1 Quick Facts and figures In 1914 New Zealand’s  population was just over one million.  In all 103,000 New Zealanders served overseas.  A total of 2688 Maori and 346 Pacific Islanders served in the New Zealand forces.  18,500 New Zealanders died in the war, and nearly 50,000 more were wounded. Over 2700 died at Gallipoli, and 12,500 died on the Western Front.  There are 500 civic war memorials in New Zealand.
What will I be thinking about this term? Why study History? History helps us to understand the  past  and  present . History helps us to  understand the world  I live in today. History trains us to  ask questions  and to  express our opinions. Understanding  historical events  and  people  are fun –a form of time travel. Wellington College and World War One. Why did students from my school want to fight in the First World War? Why do we remember our War dead on ANZAC day? Is it important for my school to still remember these soldiers who went to war? What  was life like for these soldiers who went to war?

M ilitarism A lliances I mperialism N ationalism GLOSSARY Alliances:  agreements or promises to help and defend another country. Imperialism :  trying to build up an Empire. Empire :  where a powerful country controls several less powerful countries. Militarism :  building up armed forces; getting ready for war. Nationalism :  having pride in your country, willing to defend it.
