 ZigBee is a new wireless technology
 Technological Standard Created for Control
and Sensor Networks
 Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard
 Created by the ZigBee Alliance
 Philips,Motorola,Intel,HP are all members of
the allience.
 Its low power consumption limits transmission distances to 10–
100 meters line-of-sight, depending on power output and
environmental characteristics.
 ZigBee is typically used in low data rate applications that
require long battery life and secure networking (ZigBee
networks are secured by 128 bit symmetric encryption keys.)
 ZigBee has a defined rate of 250 kbit/s, best suited for
intermittent data transmissions from a sensor or input device.
 ZigBee is a low-cost, low-power, wireless mesh
network standard targeted at the wide
development of long battery life devices in
wireless control and monitoring applications.
 Zigbee devices have low latency, which further
reduces average current.
 ZigBee chips are typically integrated with radios
and with microcontrollers that have between 60-
256 KB of flash memory.
 Standard in a fragmented market
 Many proprietary solutions, interoperability issues
 Low Power consumption
 Users expect battery to last months to years!
 Low Cost
 High density of nodes per network
 Simple protocol, global implementation
 Data rates of 250 kbps and 20 kbps
 Star topology, peer to peer possible
 255 devices per network
 CSMA-CA channel access
 Optional Guaranteed Time Slot
 Fully handshaked protocol for transfer reliability
 Low power (battery life multi-month to years)
 Dual PHY (2.4GHz and 868/915 MHz)
 Range: 10m nominal (1-100m based on settings)
 Location Aware: Yes, but optional
 There are three different ZigBee
device types that operate on the
layers in any self-organizing
application network
1. Zigbee Coordinator node
2. Full Function Device (FFD)
3. Reduced Function Device(RFD)
 It is the root of network tree and a bridge
to other network
 Able to store information about the
network
 Only one ZCN for a network
 It act as a repositary for other security
keys
 An intermediatory router transmitting data
from other devices
 Needs lesser memory than Zigbee
coordinator node
 Lesser manufacturing cost
 Can operate on all topologies
 Also act as a coordinator
 Device capable of talking in the network
 It cannot relay data from other devices
 Less memory
 Cheaper than FFD
 It talks only to the n/w coordinator

 Home Entertainment and Control
 Wireless sensor networks
 Industrial control
 Embedded sensing
 Medical data collection
 Smoke and intruder warning
 Building automation
 The ZigBee Alliance targets
applications Across consumer,
commercial, industrial and
government markets worldwide
 Home networking
 Industrial control and management
 All Zigbee compliant appliances compatibly
operate on the same network
 Setting up Zigbee wireless home management
system is relatively inexpensive
 Ability to manage home appliance network
remotely
 Eliminates dependence on Infrared device
 No central control point - dispersal of workload
 Replacement with Zigbee compliant appliances
can be costly
 No more secure than a typical 802.11 wireless
network
 Zigbee compliance certification for appliance
manufacturers mandates lithium battery use
 Can be confusing at first for the homeowner
 Zigbee compliant manufacturers slow to make
an appearance on the market
In future all devices and their controls
will be based on this standard.
Since Wireless personal Area
Networking applies not only to
household devices, but also to
individualised office automation
applications, ZigBee is here to stay. It is
more than likely the basis of future
home-networking solutions………
