- 14. We will look at these fluids: -Engine oil- -Transmission fluid- -Engine coolant- -Brake fluid- -Power steering fluid- -Washer fluid-
- 17. Different vehicles will not hold the same amount of fluid, but will be checked the same way.
- 18. The dipstick is used to check engine oil level and the transmission fluid level. Note: Some vehicles do not have a transmission fluid dipstick.
- 19. -Finding the dipstick- Your owners manual will tell you where it is or show you a picture.
- 20. Yellow = engine oil, Red = transmission fluid
- 23. Pull the oil dipstick out and wipe off the fluid. Insert the dipstick completely and remove to read the level.
- 26. The engine oil should be changed frequently. If the oil is dirty, dark brown or black, you have waited too long. Deposits are building up inside the engine.
- 27. Pull the transmission dipstick out and wipe off the fluid. Insert the dipstick completely and remove to read the level. -Note- on most vehicles the engine should be running with the transmisson in park.
- 30. The transmission fluid is red or pink in color. If it is brown and has a burned smell, you have waited too long. Flush as soon as possible.
- 31. The engine cooling system doesn't use a dipstick because the system is under pressure.
- 32. Warning- do not open this system when the engine is hot. The coolant temperature can be up to 250 deg. or hotter

- 37. The coolant can be red, orange, blue, green, or purple. Each will have it’s own change interval. If you see discoloration or debris it should be flushed.

- 40. The brake fluid is stored in a reservoir usually on the left side of the vehicle. Most of the reservoirs are translucent so you don’t have to remove the cap.
- 43. The brake fluid is hygroscopic. It will absorb moisture. Keep the reservoir cap on tightly and keep the cap of the brake fluid container tight.
- 44. This fluid should be replaced every two years. The increase in moisture content lowers the boiling point. If the brake fluid boils you will not have any brakes.
- 45. The power steering fluid is in a reservoir on the pump or remotely mounted from the pump on the inner fender. There may or may not be a dipstick.
- 48. The power steering fluid is red or clear in color. If it is brown you have waited too long. It should be flushed at frequent intervals to assure continued trouble free operation of the steering system.
- 49. Washer fluid is stored in a reservoir.
- 52. If you cannot see the fluid level fill until full.
