The number is
expected to
increase
dramatically within
the next decade,
with estimates
ranging from 50
Billion devices
to reaching
1 trillion
9 billion devices around the world are currently connected
to the Internet, including computers and smartphones
The Internet of Things
allows sensors and
actuators to be driven
by embedded
computing devices
communicating
through the existing
Internet Infrastructure

IBM’s view of the Interconnected World
Leveraging the data generated
by digital technology provides
intelligence to help us do
things better, improving our
responsiveness
and ability to predict and
optimize for future events
INTELLIGENT
Digital technologies
(sensors and other
monitoring devices) are
being embedded into
many objects, systems
and processes
INSTRUMENTED
INTERCONNECTED
In the globalized, networked
world, people, systems,
objects and processes are
connected, and they
are communicating with one
another in entirely new ways

Register and Connect devices
 Register and securely connect a wide
variety of devices
 Use the industry-standard MQTT protocol
 Remotely monitor the connectivity of
devices
 Connect many popular development boards
using device recipes
 Extend to new devices with open-source
device code from Eclipse Paho

Collect and visualize data
 Collect and manage a time-series view of data
 See what is happening on your devices with data visualization
 Build dashboards and gain access to historical data through APIs
 Control and secure data currently trapped on instrumented devices

Editor's Notes

  • #4: -- One of the most common misconceptions about the Internet of Things is that it is “new.” It is really the logical result of trends that have been advancing for several years. -- For example, this slide is from 2008, when IBM recognized these three particular trends. In the years since: o Sensors have declined in cost so much that they are everywhere (even places we don’t expect them) o Communications have become faster, cheaper, and nearly universal (at least in well-populated areas and many rural areas) o Moore’s law continues to operate, and we have more and more hardware power to refine mounds of data into nuggets of information -- As we look around us, this view was not only prophetic, but it is continues to be relevant today
