Objectives of Maintenance
 Keep plant in good working order
 Maintain safety standards
 Maximise lifetime
Maintenance Strategies
Preventative Maintenance
Carried out at pre-determined/scheduled intervals
Corrective Maintenance
Carried out to restore failed equipment
Opportunity Maintenance
Carried out when higher priority equipment is out of service
Statutory Maintenance
Carried out to facilitate statutory requirements
Condition Based Maintenance
When Condition Monitoring shows the need
Our Principals: IPEC
• Based in Manchester, UK, IPEC are specialists in On-Line Partial Discharge
(PD) monitoring and testing.
• Their main products are Partial Discharge Monitoring Systems along with
handheld Partial Discharge Spot Testers for critical electrical assets like
switchgears, transformers, cables, GIS, rotating machines, etc.
Products: IPEC
Handheld PD Detectors
Products: IPEC
Monitoring Systems
On-line Partial Discharge monitors vary in complexity and
design, depending on the environment in which they will be
permanently installed. Large systems are installed in MV
substations, monitoring every cable and every switchgear.
More industrialized devices are used in distributed applications,
such as small substations and EHV assets.
Products: IPEC
Sensors
The Partial Discharge sensors are designed to be
non-intrusive and retrofitted to existing
equipment. Different sensors are used to detect
Partial Discharge activity on various assets.
Our Services: Condition Monitoring
 Routine Tests
 Temporary Monitoring
 Permanent Monitoring
 Special Tests
What is Partial Discharge?
• Where does it occur?
• Why can it occur at normal operating voltages?
• What is a PRPD and why does PD form patterns?
• What are the effects of PD and what are the
consequences?
How to Detect PD?
• Current pulses induced in cables and switchgear
• Electromagnetically radiated pulses
• Acoustic pulses
Partial Discharge Theory
Partial Discharge Theory
What is Partial Discharge?
‘Electrical discharge that does
not completely bridge the space
between two conducting
electrodes’
Caused by defects, damage, contamination or
incorrect installation of electrical insulation
Where in does PD occur?
In electrically stressed
insulation either;
• Phase to Phase
• Phase to earth
Partial Discharge Theory
Gas filled voids in solid insulation
Bubbles in liquid insulation
Around electrodes in air/gas

Example:
PD will occur within normal
working voltage of an asset,
specifically occurring at the
defect location
The Polyurethane insulation will fail
when Va = 200kV

negative half cycles
Partial Discharge Theory
PRPD Pattern Analysis
PRPD Patterns can help differentiate PD from Noise
PRPD Pattern Analysis - PD
PRPD Patterns of PD can vary, but all have some consistent
characteristics and pattern in the power cycle
Individual discharges are low energy but they
are very localised and can be very repetitive.
Damage is caused by;
Mechanical – Ionic bombardment
Thermal – Local heating at discharge
site
Chemical – Discharge energy breaks
chemical bonds
The small discharges will cause progressive damage to the insulation
Partial Discharge Theory: Effects
Our Services: Condition Monitoring
• Condition Monitoring on MV and HV assets including Transformers, Cables, Switchgear and
Rotating Machines.
• Condition Monitoring is a form of Preventive Maintenance where we test and monitor
various parameters of electrical assets to check the asset for any developing faults.
• For every asset we carry out different Condition Monitoring Tests. In following slides, we shall
elaborate on the same asset-wise.
Condition Monitoring: Transformers
• We carry out Partial Discharge Testing and Monitoring of Transformers using Ultrasonic and UHF
technology. For Ultrasonic Detection we use Piezoelectric Acoustic Sensors and for UHF detection we use
a Drain Valve sensor to measure the internal Partial Discharge Activity in the Transformer.
• For Dry Type transformers, Ultrasonic and TEV methods are used for Partial Discharge detection.
• In addition we also carry out Thermography of the asset to find any thermal hotspots on the body of the
transformer. Oil Tests and DGA is also done to analyze the health of the Transformer Oil.
Condition Monitoring: Switchgear
• For Switchgear Panels we carry out Partial Discharge Spot Testing using Handheld PD Detectors, which use
multiple modes to detect the Partial Discharge activity inside the Switchgear Panels.
• For AIS panels we use Acoustic and TEV methods to detect partial discharge activity in the asset. For GIS
panels we use UHF sensors to detect the PD activity.
• Along with Partial Discharge, we also carry out Thermography and Inspection of the panels, given that the
panels are fit with suitable IR windows.
Condition Monitoring: Rotating Machines
• We carry out Partial Discharge testing of motors and generators using HFCT and HVCC sensors.
• Along with Partial Discharge testing, we also carryout online thermal, vibrational and acoustic analysis of
the asset to assess its condition and note any change in trends.
• To test the Electrical parameters of Motors, we are also proficient in Motor Current Signature Analysis
(MCSA) and Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) tests.
Condition Monitoring: Cables
• We carry out Partial Discharge on cables using an HFCT sensor which can be
clamped around the cable at the terminations. This gives us the accurate value of
the Partial Discharge signals travelling in the cables.
Condition Monitoring: Cables
Condition Monitoring: Continuous
Monitoring of Critical Assets
• We are also proficient in continuous partial discharge monitoring on various electrical assets (MV and HV)
like GIS, AIS, Transformers, Switchgears and Cables using our precise in-house Measurement and
Monitoring Systems manufactured by our partner IPEC, United Kingdom.
• The continuous monitoring is carried out by a centralized monitoring system, starting at 4 channels and
going up to 128+ channels depending upon the customer requirement, along with different sensors which
can be easily installed on the asset to be tested.
• We are amongst the frontrunners in India when it comes to providing Continuous Partial Discharge
Monitoring services with systems capable of 24x7 monitoring of assets with minute wise data collection
and reporting, along with accurate and swift alarm systems without any false alarms.
