  • #2: Welcome Business Cards have been handed out with the Campus Cards – the information on this card will have useful contacts that the students can use if they are experiencing IT difficulties. The ‘Get Connected’ fact sheet is in each of the rooms in Halls – this provides the instructions on how to connect to ResNet in halls of residence.Format and What’s to be coveredAims of the session are: Who is IS (Information Services) Who / where the students can get Information & support What services are available to students
  • #3: Students can use Twitter to contact us on:#itinduct (how was the presentation for them? Any questions that haven’t been answered can be sent to the hashtag, and IT Training will endeavour to answer them)ORFollow us on:@ISUOP (for news on IT, tips, hints etc)
  • #4: Students should have already: Got their Student computer account activated, instructions have been sent out via e-mail – the link is via: www.port.ac.uk/welcome Applied Online for their Campus Card, filling out the application – a jpeg Passport photograph is required to be uploaded Completed their Online Course RegistrationWhat’s left / next?
  • #5: Presenter to give a high overview of each icon, as listed below:A studente-mail account – for the students University life and beyond 5gb of storage space – network drive backed up daily 25gb - of space with their Google account Open Access Areas – these will be covered in more detail later in the presentation 24/7 service desk – including Christmas day!WiFi - facilities available for SMART devices Printing Services – further details later
  • #6: MyPortis an online portfolio that contains key information (also known as the student portal).Presenter to overview all the buttons within the ‘My Learning’ tab, as follows:My Details:- Personal details Change detailsMy Units:- Course and unit detailsMy Assessments:- Course assessments All unit marks All unit marks this yearMy Timetable:- Access their course timetable Subscribe to i-cal Available via Google Calendar and SMART devicesMy VLE:- Displays list of units in either MOODLE or Victory
  • #12: Funds:- Each student is credited with £10 No refunds Pre displays the cost of the print job Self depleting charges Warning of low credit Top-up available online and using the cash kiosksPrinting Defaults:- Duplex output Black & White printing Colour printing needs to be specified (NB: students will be charged even if they only require black and white!)Large Format Printing:- Available (up to size A0)
  • #13: Eduroam - The University is part of the Eduroam community that allows people to connect to wireless whilst visiting this and other participating institutions.WirelessEduroam:- There are hotspots across the campus (listed on IS website) Instructions are available on the web OR through the Student IT Support Centre Includes connection for supported mobile media devices Wireless access is available in all the University's buildings (apart from Halls of Residence) and can be accessed using the students University username and password
  • #14: ResNet:- Is the free, fast - up to 100mbps (megabytes per second) broadband connection available in all University halls of residences It enables connectivity of multiple devices, including computers, gaming consoles etc An information leaflet on how to connect devices has been made available in all roomsFreeview – a TV LicenceIS required
  • #15: Google Apps for EducationThere are many Apps available, the keys Apps are:-Documents/Drive Students can share documents and work together, collaboration!Mail All University email will be delivered to the students Google account 25 gb of storage Students should forward their other accounts to their Googleaccount, therefore being able to manage all their email in one place Email can be viewed on the students mobile Their account is kept for lifeStaff will email students only on their Google account. From time to time students might also get emails from the University with important and useful information - Advise the students to check their mail regularly.Talk Students can chat for free and share files instantlyCalendar Students can organise their time and share dates with friends and these can be incorporated to their calendarSmart devices Students can access their mail from their smart phones, Android or iphone. IS provide instructions on how to do this on the IS web pages
  • #16: Student IT Support Centre Located next to Blackwell's book shop behind the Student Union between Co-op and cash points. A face to face service to help answer questions relating to: Student computer account Halls broadband, telephone & TV University Wireless IS open access areas Email & student printing Replacement/re-issue of student campus card (there will be a £10 charge) Also offers a free virus removal serviceOpen term time only, 10am to 4pm
  • #17: Open Access Areas Communal area for students to study and gain network access Wireless connection available in all Open Access areasResources available: Work stations set up to help students with disabilities to access IT A4/A3 scanners Mono printing Colour printing A3 printing Large formatprinting Laminating Laptop lockers – to borrow netbooks Group working spacesDigital Signage showing PC availability in other Open Access areas – emphasise not just the Library facilityIf students need help in the Open Access areas:Service Delivery Advisors (SDAs) who can assist with basic printer and PC errors & queries and report anything major to Service Desk – SDA’s can be indentified by their Purple Shirts!Where they are: Library (ground floor) Park Building (Basement), Anglesea Building (Foyer), Portland Building (multiple)Addtionally , some Teaching Rooms can be used when available.
  • #18: Search for IT help – uses Keywords Shows Open Access availability Links to the Top 5 most popular articles Quick Links to MyPort, Moodle, Student Mail etcIf the student is still experiencing difficulty, they can contact Information Services via the Service Desk. The Service Desk is available 24/7 (details / links available top right hand corner.
