• Content:
– Elective self managed study
• Assessment:
– Agreed with your coach
– An SML module could either be worth 15 or 30
credits, depending on the size and scope of the
project.
2
Focus of your learning
• Essay / report
• External study
• Practical project
• Report on work based learning
• Professional qualification
• Work based project
3
Assessment guidance
• The assessment that you propose should be in
line with other level 4 academic modules.
• For written assignments, the word count
should be around 1,800 words for a 15 credit
project, and 3,600 words for a 30 credit
module
• It will be possible for SML modules to be
assessed in more than way (e.g., exam and
coursework, or coursework and presentation)
4
How to elect to study the self-managed
learning module:
1. Complete and submit the SML application to the Programme Leader by
4pm pm the Friday of induction week (e.g. 3rd October 2014)
2. You will be invited to attend a meeting with the Programme Leader to
discuss and review your application during the first full week of term.
3. If the Programme Leader is satisfied that the project will meet the
learning outcomes of the module, and the assessment is of an
appropriate standard, then they will provisionally approve it and you will
be able to begin working on it.
4. If the project is rejected by the Programme Leader then you will be
invited to select an alternative elective module during the meeting.
5. The Programme Leader will then send you a copy of the completed
application form, formally authorising or rejecting the project.
