This document discusses different types of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and HMI/PLC (Human-Machine Interface/Programmable Logic Controller) systems. It describes traditional standalone SCADA systems used for pipelines and power distribution over long distances, as well as local control SCADA used within plant boundaries. It also discusses typical networked SCADA architectures, standalone and networked HMI/PLC systems, and issues with distributed control, computing, I/O, standards, and life cycle costs.
