From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi This year, the British International School, Hanoi is joining with the Anne Frank Trust and Penguin Random House (UK publishers of The Diary of A Young Girl). We have linked together to mark the 70th anniversary of Anne’s death with a one minute campaign called #notsilent. Additionally, next week, from the 13th April – 17th April I am delighted to inform you that we will be hosting an exhibition of photographs related to Anne Frank. The exhibition will be set up outside the Library and in the adjoining corridors. I am also pleased that Israel’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Ms. Meirav Eilon Shahar, will officially open the exhibition and give a talk to our Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 students about the life of Anne Frank. Please find below some information and background to the exhibition: Exhibition “Anne Frank – a history for today" On her thirteenth birthday, Anne Frank was given a diary. A few weeks later her life turned upside down. In July 1942, she hid with her family in an attic in Amsterdam in order to avoid being deported to the death camps as all Jews were forced to do. For more than two years she used her diary to record what she thought, felt and experienced. She did not survive the war and died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She could not foresee that, in the years to come, millions of Issue 27 | 2 people all over the world will be reading her diary. "Anne Frank: A History for Today" depicts Anne Frank’s brief life story, abundantly illustrated with family photos and passages from her diary. Her biographical narrative is enhanced by testimony from Holocaust survivors and helpers. Historical context supplements the story through documents and photographs detailing the rise of Nazi power in Germany and the tumultuous events of the Second World War and the Holocaust that followed. The exhibit goes beyond the Anne Frank story and encourages the viewer to consider fundamental social values – tolerance, mutual respect, human rights, and democracy – as a way to educate the viewer about our individual and collective responsibilities to understand and respect diversity in our contemporary society. The exhibits are developed by Anne Frank House, co-organised by BIS Hanoi, Embassy of Israel and Embassy of Netherlands from 13th to 17th April 2015. - 3. The final Duke of Edinburgh International Award Expedition group is in Sapa this weekend doing their qualifying expedition. When they return to school on Monday they will be a step closer to receiving their Bronze Certificates. They still need to spend time on their Personal Activities, Volunteering and Skills, which is largely organised by themselves so it still takes great perseverance to complete this. We have been privileged to welcome Ms Kristi Pozon to the school this week. She is the IB Coordinator from an international school in the Philippines and she is our IB consultant. She spent two days talking to representatives of our board, students, parents, our leadership teams and subject leaders about our preparation for the IB Diploma Programme. It was a very helpful visit and affirmed that we are well on track to achieving IB authorisation. Our last IGCSE practical examinations are early next week and also the last few lessons. As I’ve mentioned Issue 27 | 3 From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary before, IGCSE and AS Level examinations start straight after the Spring holiday. As well as covering the skills and content needed in each course, teachers and tutors have also been teaching study skills. Students following this advice and studying regularly and efficiently will boost their chances in the May written examinations. An old teacher of mine once said “Revision is like earning money; we must all do it but there are many ways to do it and you must find the best method that works for you and reaps the highest rewards”. - 4. On Tuesday and Wednesday this week we had the pleasure of welcoming parents into school throughout the school day for ‘Shared Learning’ meetings. These meetings are very special in that they take place between parents, teachers and children. Children sit with their parents and look together at their books, discussing what they have been learning throughout the year. It is very much the child that leads the meeting, pointing out things that they have done of which they feel particularly proud or wish to tell their parents more about. Parents ask relevant questions to probe further and find out more, with the normal parent/child roles temporarily suspended. Teachers join in the conversations during the session, helping to guide discussions about what the child is already doing well and what future targets for improvement are. It is interesting that most children are absolutely correct in their self-assessment, knowing very well their own strengths and areas for development. One of the most pleasing things about the ‘Shared Learning’ however, is seeing the looks on the faces of both parents and children, who are engrossed in conversation. Many parents are genuinely surprised and certainly impressed with the standard of work that their child has produced and the fact that they are able Issue 27 | 4 From Mrs Karen Hanratty - Head of Primary to describe their learning so fluently and confidently. Children have immense pride when showing their books to their parents and enjoy having their parent’s undivided attention for that period of time, focused solely on them and their learning. It is truly a precious time for everyone involved. FINE DINING

- 6. Last week, Year 5 had a fantastic three days at Cuc Phuong National Park. The weather was amazing, the activities were great fun and everyone had a very enjoyable time. The original aims of the expedition were most definitely achieved. The children built stronger relationships with each other by helping each other to persevere through new experiences. They were exposed to different situations outside their normal environment, including visiting the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre and Turtle Centre as well as trekking through the National Park. Some of the children claimed, “I’ve never walked before!” Another one of the aims was for the children to develop independence skills. This was achieved as the teachers did not help the children at all (Only joking!). The children were extremely responsible, looking after their own belongings, tidying their rooms and helping each other to serve food at meal times. Also, Year 5 had to show teamwork and cooperation skills through a range of challenges, including a Tug of War contest. 5I beat 5B 2-0, much to the disappointment of Mr Adams! Some of the other highlights included playing football and swimming but the biggest highlight was The Talent Show on the second evening. The children were only given thirty minutes to practise their act and what they produced was fantastic. There were a range of talents on display, including singing, magic and taekwondo.
