- 2. From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi Next week, we will be visited by two members of the Nord Anglia Education Team. Inderjit Dehal (Director of Professional Development) and Jayne Bennion (Quality Assurance) will spend a day with us visiting classrooms and meeting with staff, students and parents. It will be a great opportunity for them to learn about us and for us to find out more about Nord Anglia Education. In relation to academic matters, our teachers now have access to a Nord Anglia website where they can log in and access: The Global Campus Nord Anglia University Ambitions Based Learning The Global Campus Whilst our teachers can now access the Global Campus, we hope that very soon our students will also be able gain access. The Global Campus is an online learning space where students can lead their own learning in a safe but exciting environment. Sections are tailored to Primary, Secondary and Post-16 students. Our students will join other NAE students around the world to create content, challenge each other and question invited experts in activities designed to develop creative and critical thinking. The Global Campus will also provide opportunities for students from around the world to come together to work on various projects. Nord Anglia University NAE University is an online professional development forum for our teachers. It gives teachers the opportunity to enroll and participate in courses that enhance their educational development. This will be a wonderful asset for the continued professional development of our teachers. Ambitions Based Learning Nord Anglia are now developing a new learning Programme across its schools called “Ambitions Based Learning”. It is a learning programme for students based on their ambitions for the future. It really is an exciting project and we are very much looking forward to being a part of it. - 3. We had another first this week with the Biology AS practical examination. Science practical examinations are an excellent way to assess student‟s practical application of science and promote this important aspect of science. Mr Westropp felt the students coped well with this new challenge, helped, of course, by considerable hours of practice. Years 7 – 10 completed their internal examinations this week. Year 7 and 8 did their assessments in classrooms while Years 9 and 10 did examinations in all written subjects in the auditorium to prepare them for the IGCSE examinations that lie ahead. We welcomed Aidan Crawley to the school this week. He is the BIS HCMC University and Career counsellor and gave us training on writing recommendations for the US and other countries outside the UK. He also talked to parents about the university application process. Our current Year 12 started their university research this time From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary Issue 32 3 last year and Mr Byrne‟s comment at the time has definitely come true; “Time will go faster than you think”. By November, most of Year 12 will have submitted their applications and many will have started to receive offers. The Student Council are working hard on their last project of the year – the Secondary Prom. This has become an institution in 3 short years and we look forward to this year‟s event. - 4. There have been many curriculum developments in the Primary section of the school this year, but one of the most visible has been the growth of the place of art within children‟s learning. At the start of the school year we opened a dedicated art room in the Primary wing, where all KS2 classes were timetabled for lessons every week. KS1 classes were also invited to use this teaching space whenever possible. Art lessons became a fixture of all Primary timetables and teachers planned exciting activities for these lessons accordingly. The „Big Draw‟ event in October also helped to raise the profile of art along with the display of great masterpieces (reproductions naturally!). Art ECAs have also grown in number and range, and have proved popular, being well subscribed every term. From Ms Karen Hanratty - Head of Primary Issue 32 4 Over the course of the year there have been some wonderful displays of art around the school. Year 2 have recently been focusing on the work of Salvador Dali, creating beautiful oil pastels drawings in a similar style and making „melting clocks‟ from clay. Year 6 spent a half term studying different styles of art including the impressionists, cubism and Japanese print art. Year 5 created some fabulous models earlier in the year as part of their theme on „Myths and Legends‟ and Year 3 produced some wonderful work on their theme of „Rainforests‟. Art has become a far more integral part of learning and teaching in all year groups and has added extra richness to the curriculum.

- 6. What a great year it has been in Year 6. The activities started by welcoming parents to the class for shared fun learning activities such as mathematical problems and practical activities. Parents and children also took part in our Learning Insights Day. Both of these special days enabled parents to experience the teaching and activities their children were undertaking in class. At BIS we believe that learning is about enjoying the learning as much as the learning itself, and throughout the year we have completed some really enjoyable activities such as a visit to Times City Aquarium, the Ethnology Museum and going on an fabulous activity week to Hoi An. Coupled with this, we had many interesting visits from a host of special guests who came to share their knowledge with the children including a guest from Fiji, a marketing specialist and a famous Vietnamese poet. To round off a truly memorable year and in preparation for next year, the chil- dren are joining secondary students at lunch break once a week to give them an opportunity to make new friends.
