ISSUES OF GRAMMAR
TEACHING AND
ASSESSMENT
OBJECTIVES
To enable students to understand the importance of grammar
in effective communication.
To familiarize students with the common pedagogical issues
that arise in the teaching of grammar.
To guide students in understanding the principles of
sequencing in grammar instruction.
To introduce students to a variety of methods for teaching
grammar.
GRAMMAR?
Why should we teach
Teaching grammar provides students with the skills to communicate in a concise
and articulate manner, which in turn will benefit them in school and in later life.
Proper knowledge of grammar will help students to achieve effective
communication skills both speech and written forms, which necessary across
academic and in many career paths and
jobs.
In order to be able to speak a language to some degree of proficiency and to be
able to say what we really want to say, we need to have some grammatical
knowledge

Issues of Grammar Teaching and Assessment
A. Sentence machine argument
Grammar is needed in order to make new sentences
B. Fine-tuning argument
Grammar is needed in order to be more explicit and to make
sure you don't confuse the listener or reader
C. Fossilization argument
Grammar teaching is needed, because otherwise learners will
reach a language plateau beyond which it is very difficult to progress.
D. Advance-organizer argument
When grammar is taught to learners, they will notice it and will
be able to use it themselves.
E. Discrete item argument
Language seem easier when grammar is taught, because grammar consists of rules, which makes the
language more clear instead of a gigantic, shapeless mass
F. Rule-of-law argument
Grammar is a great way for having structure in class. It
offers the teacher a structured system
G. Learner expectations argument
Learners expect grammar, so in order not to turn them
down, you'll teach grammar

Sentences
Diagramming
When you diagram sentences, you
identify the sentence's different parts of
speech and how they work together.
Even the simplest of sentences must
have a subject and a verb, and
grammatical rules dictate how the
subject and verb interact. Keep reading
to learn how to diagram a sentence and
why diagramming sentences can give
you a deeper understanding of the
English language.
Writing
Learning Through
This method is often used in schools in the U.S.
and Canada. Students are encouraged to explore
language through creative writing and reading,
picking up correct grammar usage along the way.
If there are specific problems with certain
grammatical rules, these are covered in a more
structured lesson.
Teaching
Inductive
The inductive method of teaching grammar
involves presenting several examples that illustrate
a specific concept and expecting students to
notice how the concept works from these
examples. No explanation of the concept is given
beforehand, and the expectation is that students
learn to recognize the rules of grammar in a more
natural way during their own reading and writing.
Teaching
Deductive
The deductive method of teaching grammar is an
approach that focuses on instruction before
practice. A teacher gives students an in-depth
explanation of a grammatical concept before they
encounter the same grammatical concept in their
own writing.
Teaching
Interactive
Another method of teaching grammar is to
incorporate interactivity into lessons. Using games
to teach grammar not only engages students but
also helps them to remember what they’ve
learned. This method allows teachers to tailor their
lessons to the different learning styles of students.
