Special Needs Students:
Resources and Strategies That Will
Enhance Their Learning Experiences.
BY: TYLER CORLEY
Overview
 Students with delayed life skills or other disabilities are eligible for
special services in schools under the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act.
 These students are required to have an Individualized Education
Plan, or IEP, which outlines the services and resources the student is
required to have while attending school.
 These services and resources are often utilized by the child in a
regular school environment.
 Specific teaching practices that will be helpful to the student as well
as any required assistive technology will be included in the student’s
IEP. The information within the IEP is specifically tailored to the needs
of each child who requires one.
Strategies for Students with Mild
Learning Disabilities
 Students with Mild Learning Disabilities have below average
functioning in one or more subjects covered at that student’s grade
level.
 Strategies for teaching students with Mild Learning Disabilities
include:
 Break lessons into small parts
 Regularly check the student’s progress
 Use visual aids
 Provide copious practice work
 Use process questions like “How does that work?”
Strategies for teaching students
with ADHD
 ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
 Students with ADHD often have extreme issues with paying attention
and refraining from becoming disruptive in educational settings.
 Strategies for teaching students with ADHD include:
 Keep assignment duration brief and feedback on work immediate
 Direct instruction is more effective than seat work
 Academic activities are best scheduled in the morning
 Rules must be clearly presented and regularly enforced.
 Auditory cues are important
Strategies for teaching students
with Auditory Disorders
 Students with Auditory Disorders often either cannot hear instruction
given to them by a teacher or cannot distinguish between sounds
when hearing someone talk.
 Strategies for teaching students with Auditory Disorders include:
 Preferential Seating
 Limit Background Noise
 Repeat yourself
 Write directions and present using words as well as speech
Assistive Technology
 Assistive Technology is any form of technology which is utilized by
someone offset the effects of a disability they have.
 Assistive Technology can be used by students in school settings to
help them retain and use information that they are learning and to
allow them to keep up with the other students in their class when
they might normally fall behind.
 Assistive Technology can be as simple as a calculator to help a
student in math to a computer screen which helps a student with
limited social skills communicate with his or her peers.
Assistive Technology for Students
with Mild Learning Disabilities
 Assistive Technology can help students with Mild Learning Disabilities
and ADHD keep up in class and retain more material.
 Examples of such Assistive Technology are:
 Videoing class for later viewing
 Using a webcam to allow students to view class from another location.
 Using word processors that will predict the next word the student is
going to write to increase speed and spell check to correct spelling
while writing.
 Using a calculator in math to increase speed in completing problems
and understanding of the processes without the student becoming
frustrated by completing simple computations.
Assistive Technology for Students
with Auditory Disorders
 Assistive Technology for students with Auditory Disorders usually
center around helping the student hear and understand verbal
instruction they are given.
 The most popular form of such technology is known as Hearing
Assistive Technology or HATS.
 What HATS does:
 Allows the student to hear the teacher at a consistent level
 Allows the student to hear the teacher more prominently than the
background noise
 Allows the student to hear his or her own voice through the use of a
microphone
