3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN)
Why GLOSOLAN?
Currently there are several limitations to global
assessment:
(i) some data simply do not exist for all places on Earth
(ii) while specific data may be widely available, it is
often collected and reported using different methods,
diverse standards, and/or using incompatible scales.

GLOSOLAN’s objectives…
• To strengthen the performance of laboratories
through use of standardized methods and protocols
• To harmonize soil analysis methods so that soil
information would be comparable and interpretable
across laboratories, countries and regions
• [ASPIRATION] To provide a certification for technical
competencies in laboratory analysis.

• Transfer information on GLOSOLAN to other labs in their country
• Transfer the knowledge acquired through GLOSOLAN activities to
other labs in their country
• Promote the establishment of National Soil Laboratory Networks

What did GLOSOLAN achieve so far?
3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN)
In 2019, the compilation of an open access online database on
national custom and laboratory import procedures started. To
be launched in 2020 and to be regularly updated.
3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN)
In 2019, the GSP Soil Data Policy was revised. Amendment endorsed
by the 7th GSP Plenary Assembly (June 2019)
Amendment 1: Protection of data collected and exchanged
in the context of soil laboratory harmonization activities
(GLOSOLAN/RESOLAN)
1.1 Anonymity of soil laboratories
A general non-public laboratory code will be developed and
maintained by the GSP Secretariat and by other few selected
actors involved in GLOSOLAN and proficiency testing
activities.
Individual laboratory performances are communicated
individually. Such laboratory-specific reports are non-public.
1.2 Data storage and evaluation of ring tests
Methods and criteria for evaluation of rings tests are public.
Analytical data are stored by the above-mentioned
secretariats, and are non-public.
The use of data from rings tests by the secretariats or other
third parties require the consent of the ring test
participants.

by the 7th GSP Plenary Assembly (June 2019)
Amendment 1: Protection of data collected and exchanged
in the context of soil laboratory harmonization activities
(GLOSOLAN/RESOLAN)
1.3 Results and publication
Results and reports have to be coordinated with the ring
test participants. This includes the sharing of drafts and the
option to review.
Results of rings tests are public, the codes (see 1.1) are
applied.
Authorships and acknowledgements follow the GSP Soil
Data Policy, section 3 (Ownership, data rights and citation).”

Editor's Notes

  • #8: We need to make sure that if we send a same soil sample to different laboratories we get the same results
  • #9: And we need to make sure that this result is actually right
  • #10: With this in mind, we cannot assume that access to technology is the key to get good data.
