Item ii ib. global soil organic carbon sequestration map (gsocseq) yusuf yigini
GSOCseq- Global Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration Potential Map
The GSOCseq is to fill a big gap, simulate soil organic carbon
stocks over a 20–year period in agricultural lands and quantify the
soil organic carbon sequestration potential under different
sustainable soil management and business as usual (BAU)
scenarios at national scale and eventually will give us a global
perspective and understanding of critical role of soils in major
global issues.

BAU
SOCseq BAU
BAU scenario refers to the land use, land
management, production practices or
technologies that are currently being
implemented in croplands and grazing
lands.
GSOCseq- Global Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration Potential Map
Entire process is country-driven, continuous, participatory,
based on and guided by the best available science, rigorous
collection and analysis of appropriate data, and consideration of
experiences and good practices within, and outside, countries.
● Set attainable and evidence based national
targets for carbon sequestration;
● Achieve their commitments to the LDN
Target Setting Programme implemented by the
UNCCD;
● Simulate national soil organic carbon stocks
under Business as Usual (BAU) and different
sustainable soil management scenarios;
● Identify which regions, soil types and
production systems have greater risks of
decreasing and which with greater potential
to increase SOC stocks, in order to establish
priorities for research and implementation of
public policies;
GSOCseq - ADDED VALUE & BENEFITS
● Support policy making in adoption of SSM
practices that foster SOC sequestration at
national scale;
● Improve technical capacities on sustainable
soil management, soil data management,
digital soil mapping and modelling.
● Improve soil health as an integral step
towards achieving the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), specifically the
Goals on zero hunger (SDG 2), climate
action (SDG 13), and life on land (SDG 15).
● Support the provision of incentives to
farmers implementing SOC-centred SSM
practices
