IWMI in Ethiopia
Priorities
The overall objective of research by the International Water
Management Institute (IWMI) is to enhance the management of
land and water resources so as to improve food security and
livelihoods, and protect the environment. In the East Africa and the
Nile Basin region, IWMI develops evidence-based strategies and
solutions to agricultural water management-related challenges, key
issues driving food insecurity. Some important issues covered by
IWMI research include: agricultural water use and efficiency; land
degradation and losses of ecosystem services; equitable sharing of
water resources and benefits from interventions; and adaptation of
climate change/variability.
Progress
Agricultural Water Management: In partnership with
the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources and
CARE, IWMI organized a national multi-stakeholder
consultation workshop that established Agricultural
Water Management Platform (AWMP) in January 2015.
AWMP facilitates experience sharing and learning, and
policy engagement among stakeholders in an integrated
manner.
Natural resource management: These projects have
produced a range of data and findings, which together
provide an evidence base from which to influence local,
national and regional policies, and based on these
practical findings help develop best practices on
sustainable natural resources management.
Capacity development: Key to building capacity in local
community and partner institutions, IWMI East and Nile
Basin has supported—sponsored and supervised—more
than 200 post-graduate (18 PhD and 184 MSc) students.
In addition, IWMI offers short-term training, including
irrigation agronomy, natural resource management, soil
fertility etc. to farmers, development agents and
experts.
Partners
IWMI projects are usually undertaken in partnership with
other CGIAR centrs, international research organizations and
universities, together with local and national institutions.
The donors include: CGIAR, Department for International
Development United Kingdom, Department of Foreign
Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, USAID, EU,
German Federal Ministry for the Environment,
Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in
Education.
CGIAR is a global research partnership for a food secure future
