Jain scriptures, known as the Agamas, are the primary source of Jain doctrine and philosophy. The Agamas were orally transmitted for generations before being written down around 500 CE. The Agamas are divided into two categories - the Angas, which are the primary texts covering topics like philosophy, ethics and rituals, and the Upangas, which are secondary texts covering history, mythology and meditation. Some of the most important Angas are the Acharanga Sutra and Sthananga Sutra, while important Upangas include the Aupapatika Sutra and Prajna Prakriti.
