Jainism is an Indian religion founded on the teachings of the Tirthankaras, especially Mahavira. The core teachings are non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity, and detachment from the material world. Jains believe in reincarnation until one breaks the cycle through ascetic practices that cleanse the soul of karma. There are two main sects, the Svetambara who allow both male and female Tirthankaras, and the Digambara who believe only men can be Tirthankaras. Mahavira is considered the most recent Tirthankara who established the core principles of Jainism in the 6th-5th century BCE
