The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is an advanced infrared observatory designed to explore the universe, with a 6.5 m primary mirror and a total cost of $8.8 billion. Launching in 2019, it will focus on key scientific themes including the formation of galaxies and the origins of life, utilizing its suite of instruments to observe light from 0.6 to 28 μm wavelengths. Its innovative technology, including a large sunshield and segmented mirror, enables it to see up to 13.5 billion years into the past, thus providing insights into the universe's early history.
