• GPS is the shortened form of NAVSTAR GPS. This is an acronym for Navigation
System with Time And Ranging Global Positioning System.
• Guided missile is a self propelled, pilotless controlled flight vehicle that is
guided to its target by GUIDANCE.
• GPS Guided bombs using a low cost Joint Direct Attack Munition kit that
enables FIRE-&-FORGET mechanism .
• It uses Inertial Measurement System (IMS) & GPS which monitors the
weapon’s location and altitude to adjust its flight path.
• Our main aim is to know how GPS is used TO GUIDE THE MISSILE !

• Contains Orbital Information and Status of visible satellites.
• GPS receiver uses this data to determine which satellites it
expects to see in the local sky.
• It contains the precise Orbital Information of its own.
• Tells GPS receiver where each GPS satellite should be at
any particular time throughout the day.

• The GPS receiver and satellite generate the same pseudo-random code at
exactly the same time. When the code arrives from the satellite, the time
difference is compared to the same code generated by the receiver.

• The orbits are arranged so that at anytime,
anywhere on Earth, there are at least four
satellites "visible" in the sky.
• GPS is a constellation system that tracks
anyone on the EARTH any time in any

• High-precision weapon for MASS DESTRUCTION.
• There is no need of ground team support for the attack.
Disadvantages
• Precision of weapons depend on the precision of measurement
system.
• It is possible to jam the GPS.
• They Require Smarter Complex Software Coding.

In the future, the battlefield will actually exist inside a virtual world. There are
future projects in which military vehicles such as tanks are being outfitted with
GPS transmitters and other remote control devices so can vehicle can be piloted
by a human without the human physically present.

Hence, it is conclude that how a unguided bomb can be converted
to a guided one with a low cost JDAM kit and as a result GPS guided
weapons with their technological advances over previous,
became the superior weapon of choice in modern day warfare
as it does not leave the gunner vulnerable for attack.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: Every satellite will broadcast almanac data for EVERY satellite. to calculate its position accurately.
  • #6: . If GPS signal leaves satellite at time “T”…and is picked up by the receiver at time “T + 3.”
  • #7: This difference is multiplied by the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) to determine the distance to the satellite
  • #11: precisely known point (surveyed benchmark).
