- 2. These are the questions that we asked Fr. Trung.
- 3. 1:Why did the Jesuits form? Like many other Religious Orders, the Jesuits were formed by the calling of God through Saint Ignatius of Loyola, who was born in 1491 from a noble family at the castle Loyola, in Spain. After his conversion at the age of 29, Ignatius was a man of vision to do great things for the greater glory of God, that is to save souls, by proclaiming the Faith through missionary work with those peoples and countries in greatest need. Obviously, to do such thing requires men of the same vision and calling. Ignatius ’ first companions were Francis Xavier, and Peter Faber. This small group soon attracted other young men as well, and they eventually formed the Society of Jesus in 1540 with the approval of Pope Paul III.
- 4. 2:What work did they do? Apart from being priests in the Church, we have had men working in many other fields. We have schools, parishes, and many other social apostolates. . Jesuits have worked as missionaries, but also as teachers, scientists, mathematicians, doctors, theologians, astronomers, builders, painters, architects, poets, and many more. To put it in another way, Jesuits do whatever is needed for the greater glory of God.
- 5. 3:What work did they do today? The Jesuits main works are still parishes, schools, spirituality, and social justice. With the many different changes in the world today, we still do many things as said above, but the Jesuits also try to keep up with the changes of our time and address the issues of mass migration, ecology, and technology.
- 6. 4: How are the laity involved with the Jesuits? The laity are involves with the Society of Jesus in many ways. We see them as our partner in our effort to promote faith and justice in the world. Many of them are directors of our works or are working with in many other areas of need in the world.
- 7. 5: As a Jesuit, what do you do? At the moment I am working as an assistant priest at St Ignatius Church, but next year I am hoping to go to China to work with an organisation that help care for the people with Hanson Disease and people with HIV ’ s. After that I don ’ t know yet.
- 8. 6: Do you enjoy being a Jesuit? I love being a Jesuit. I am very happy to have this vocation. I could not think of anything else I would rather do.
- 9. 7: Are the Jesuits still an active order? Very much so. Our main line of work includes running parishes, schools, and spirituality (giving retreats to people). However, we are also involved in many areas of work like: social justice, refugees, theology, philosophy, and many more.
- 10. 8: How long have you been a Jesuit? This is my 11th year as a Jesuit .
- 11. 9: How did the Jesuits form? I think the answer to this is also the answer I wrote for question 1.
- 12. 10: Where do you do all your work? The a nswer to this question is also similar to question 5.
- 13. 11: Where did the Jesuits start? Saint Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus was born in Spain, but he and his companion studied in Paris. However, it was in Rome that the Society of Jesus was formally formed with the approval of Pope Paul III.
- 14. 12: As a Jesuit who do you help? I help anyone who need my help and anyone I am able to help. The work that I do is given to me by my superior (boss). So basically, I help those who fall under my line of work.
- 15. 13: How many Jesuits are there today? At present, there are about 16,000 or more Jesuits in the world. In Australia, there are around 150 Jesuits.
- 16. 14: how old where you when you became a Jesuit? I was 25 when I enter the Society of Jesus.
- 17. 15: What made you choose to join the Jesuits? There are many reasons for someone wanting to join a religious life or to be a priest, but like all other, for me it must first be a calling from God, and a desire to serve God and God ’ s people. Why I wanted to become a Jesuit, was particularly because I see the Jesuit way of life and the work that they do, their spirituality, are all suitable with my vocation and would help me to develop my abilities to serve God and others.
