Loyola University Chicago was founded in 1870 by Arnold Damen, SJ to provide education to underserved Irish immigrants. Ignatius of Loyola was originally a knight who, after being injured in battle, underwent a religious conversion and founded the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits initially focused on education and their approach stood out for its quality and inclusiveness. There are now 28 Jesuit colleges in the United States, with Loyola University Chicago being the largest. The Jesuit tradition emphasizes values like reflection, discernment, faith that does justice, and finding God in all things.
