Jonathan Myrick Daniels was an Episcopal seminarian who was killed in 1965 while defending a black teenager during a civil rights protest in Alabama. In response to Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for help, Daniels spent time in Selma assisting local civil rights activists. On August 14, 1965, Daniels was part of a group protesting whites-only stores when they were arrested. After being released from jail with no transportation, Daniels and others attempted to get drinks at a store when a man threatened them with a shotgun, aiming it at a black teenager.
