Editing a Journey Sequence
Creating a journey sequence tells the story of a person or object moving from point a to
point b. The way in which this simple process is edited can have a huge impact on the
way that an audience will perceive it.
Whilst editing the journey of someone taking a picnic to a forest, several obstacles
became clear. The first of these was that cutting moving images filmed through the
window of a moving car together could be very jarring to watch as they each have
different motions within the frame, for example; oncoming cars or pedestrians. When
these images are cut together it sometimes appears as if cars are jumping from one
place to the next. Each piece of footage had to be carefully cut at moments where very
little motion was happening in the background so that the next shot could follow on
more seamlessly.
Another issue that was experienced was the constant need to use jump cuts as almost
every piece of footage had been taken in a slightly different location. Although this
could have been extremely jarring to watch, the story of the journey was reinforced by
this rather than obscured by it. The montage middle section of the sequence, which was
dominated by jump cuts, created a passage of time, revealing that whoever was taking
the journey had been traveling for a while. This therefore aided the storytelling rather
than creating a jarring effect on the spectator.
The use of handheld camera inside the car and stationary shots everywhere else also
created a problem during the edit. Hand held footage is difficult to edit due to the
unpredictability of the movement of the footage. When cutting between still and hand
held shots the effect is quite jarring as the camera suddenly either stops or starts
moving unexpectedly. To ease this every shot was cut on action so that no matter if it
was still or not there was movement within the picture. This made these cuts more
successful.
